Hi guys,,, just finished going through overhaul of my 112 outboard. I pulled power head and took to marine mechanic for rebuild. The top of #1 piston was broke apart between ring and top. Machine shop was able to to overbore .020 to clean up damage on 2 holes, so it was completely rebuilt with new pistons and all holes bored. Bearings were replaced with caged bearings on pistons, and crank bearing checked out ok. Carbs were not rebuilt but inspected and ok'd by mechanic. I replaced thermostats to find both were broken on one side. My overheat alarm was out of svc (replaced). 1 head was replaced, and water deflectors checked ok. Motor is running great now, with new prop, gets up to 5300 @ bout 45mph (not trimming motor) Infrared checked head temp bout 140-150 on both sides.
Having fun with new (rebuilt) outboard,, but still kinda wondering,,,, did I miss anything? I sure learned alot about these motors. Thanks, Joe

overheat alarm was out of service, what more do you need to know.

When the ring caught the port and broke the piston, it was probably due to coking. That is often the result when the engine is lugged and you might want to check that you are not overpropped. You should try to set up for maximum 5,800 RPM at WOT with your average load.

Be sure to perform your annual de-carbon treatment as well.

I now will do an annual de-carbing, how often should we check / change thermostats? Such an inexpensive piece, but what a bit%@ to change out. I always flush motor after saltwater also. And I change h20 pump bout 2-3 years. Usually I pull out a pump that looks brand new in same condition as new one. Just wish manftr made it easier to check/change thermostats, seems like they should be changed 1 every 5 years.

1 more question, will I get more rpm if I trim motor up a little?
Im still going through a little break in of motor. Im not keeping it at wot too long at all. Very happy with hole shot and top speed. Or do I need to re-prop when 5300 is max rpm?

You might get the extra RPM by raising the motor up one hole; just be sure that you are in deep enough for water to reach the water intake at WOT.
