i have two boats both projects both 16ft fiberglass boats from the 70 that the gel coat have lost the lives , there are finished to point of need to paint.
i am cheap, but like a job well done.
first question has any used auto spray paint to do there boat Topside?
and what kind enamel lacquer? or something?

next question say this is bad idea, and go with one step marine enamel
that i would thin out and brush.
is there an inexpensive marine paint system out..there that can be purchased at lowes , home depot or some marine supply ....that is not going run $150.00 or more for two 16ft fiberglass boat.

please help
thank

Go to the George Kirby Jr. Company website. An old boat paint company out of New England. Their prices are not bad for an excellent paint.

You can get some decent quality urathane paint and add some hardner or get some industrial rustoleum enamal and add a bit of hardner (Bondo uses Rustoleum)

there have been several boats on the site that used automotive paint, with great results. but they are trailered boats, and not stored in the water.

Re: what, where, why not.....paint question

any links to these project that have used auto paint? my boat is trailered in will be in water maybe 30 times this season.
the lake tends to leave a build up on the boats.

i just want a metallic fake blue, i was think a would spray or brush.... a epoxy primer first , then i have metallic blue and a clear coat over top....like car finish

are an thoughts about this, tips , hints, links?

RE to: Bob_VT
please bare in mind this is going over bondo holes , so the paint needs to stick to it.some took a power drill to the topside and drill atleast 35 holes!

i don't know much about paint are taking about polyurathane enamel like boat store sell? also, what type of prime should i use for the polyurathane enamel or industrial rustoleum enamal...if any? ( i have a lot in the finishing i need to repair, example:dents , scares. most have sand down .

next, can i get such a thing at home depot or lowes?
" decent quality urathane paint and add some hardner"

The industrial rustoleum enamal, i look at anderson general store they had
reustoleum ... enamel, now it was list for metals if i remember. Is this the stuff? will say industrial, how will i know?

Thanks all for your input, so far

You want cheap, but you also want a metallic-clear coat finish, they aren't cheap $$$$ and you need better equipment and good skills, no brushing allowed.

Automotive paints work just fine on a trailer boats, but they're designed to be sprayed, if you don't have a compresser and spray gun, that's more $$$
Some of the marine paints can be brushed with excellent results and in bad weather it can be done indoors without all of the overspray, so there's less work involved.

You need to decide if you want cheap and good looking, or costly and maybe better looking.

Edit: You made your last post while I was typing, looks like you may have decided on the way you want to go.

Brightside's will probably the most cost effective paint your gonna find, Perfection is a bit spendy but even a top professional would have issues's prepping and finishing a boat to bring out that paint's true potential.

Order a can or brightsides boot paint, it's about ten dollars and play with it a bit, if you have a old mirror laying around, use the brightside's on it, it amazing stuff.

Brightsides probably $100 a boat

Perfection probably doulbe that.
