It will make me say a whole lot of curse words but it won't stop me from taking my boat out.

I am with Bomar76. I have already modified my pricing schedule for air conditioning repair to reflect the increase in fuel costs. Bear in mind that the cost of me getting to the job goes up, the cost of the parts and equipment getting manufactured and delivered to where I pick them up goes up. Everything hinges on the cost of fuel.
(Except my pay rate :( :( )

Re: What Will $3.00+ Gas Do To Your Boating

Thomwv,
I probably have the worst timing of anyone as last year I decided to go back to a power boat with twin 350 chevy engines and a 200 gal. tank capacity. Made one trip last year about 140 miles each way and it cost me about $580, gas cost between $2.00 and $2.19 a gallon. Before the 30 ft. sea ray I could get away with about $35 a season for diesel use on a 32 sailboat.

My wife and I are retired and on a fixed income so there is no way I can charge someone more to pass on the increased costs.

This leaves one option, and I really hate the thought but we will be spending more time at the dock and less time running the boat.

This also means we will not be making many cruises and renting slips at other marinas, that will hurt their bottom lines.

We had a nice trip planed for this coming season , we were going from long island to newport rhode island. We will just have to wait and see how much the rip off is going to be this year as far as gas prices.

This price gauging will benifit the gas companys but is going to hurt many other companys quite servearly.

If this keeps up I may have to go back to sail again.

Bill

As veteran boaters we all know that gas is our least concern when it comes to the expense in boating, remember, big hole in the water where we flush our money.

I see a trend here, Those of us who do not have 100 gallon tanks seem to take it in stride. I feel for those of you that are in this situation. Most of my runs are only a few miles, as opposed to a long run to the fishing grounds. I usually go boating 2-3 times a week and when I do fuel it is usually 15 gallons. 15 will usually run me a week and a half or two. The gas prices do affect me in my vehicle, I drive a gas hog the wife drives a more palatable fuel consumer. It is not uncommon for me to take here vehicle for runs that are over 60 miles although I would prefer my truck. These decisions would become more common as economy would take a front seat over comfort. There is no compareison in comfort to me yet my wallet does call some of the shot's.

Boomyal, I could be wrong, but isn't there a republican in office right now, and don't the gas prices suck? Wasn't there a democrat in office before and didn't the gas prices rock? I was paying 90something cents a gallon before Bush took over, what is up with that? Don't get me wrong, I am not a huge fan of the democratic party (I also am not a fan of Bush either), but it just seems to me that ever since the late 80s, when a republican has been in office, the gas prices have sucked. If the demos are so horny for mass transit, it sure hasn't gone anywhere. I tell you, if Bush wants to impress me before election time, he better start taking a real hard look at how our economy is being affected by his lack of interest. He has gone and kicked some arse overseas, whoopidy-doo. Our economy is extremely fragile right now and he is doing nothing. Tax cuts are meaningless, I am paying more taxes than I was before, AND I get to pay more for gas to get to work so I can pay more taxes. While my political belief system leans towards the right, Bush is a whole new kind of crappy leader. I am waiting to be impressed....

The Government is not for the people - it is for Big Money and how good it can look to other nations. Just think NAFTA and all the other anti- US actions the government has in place. All the funds we are sending overseas could do a lot of GOOD here in the US.
My .02

ZmOz
That sounds like an excellent idea, although, I think I will invest in a locking gas cap :D

The price increase will have no effect on my boating. I spend (to us) quite a bit on boating and wouldn't give it up for anything...

By the way, isn't 7 knots about the ideal trolling speed... A 30' Pearson (sailboat) has a max hull speed of 7 knots....mhhh might have to use my buddies sailboat for more than the Thurs. night race. :D

I'm going hopefully to be running the old Bearcat 55 so fuel won't be that much of a biggie. Cruise around until we're good and tired for the cost of six or eight gallons. Best money we can spend to go have fun together as a family.

As to what I think of the President, politics, and what is wrong with the world I think I'm going to use my soap box to step up onto my high horse and start a thread in dockside chat where politics is more acceptable. I'll try to get to that tomorrow.

Have a great weekend, everyone. Looks like it should break 70 degrees Saturday where I am. Spring fever is hitting! :D

Bearcat, I loved my old Homelite 55, it did sip gas. Very efficient for an old motor. I just wanted to go faster.....

Re: What Will $3.00+ Gas Do To Your Boating

Well im glad I am investing in a four stroke fuel siping outboard (Honda 225). My old 2 stroke Yamaha 200 hp got 2 mpg.. sounds like it died just in time !!!!! I think the big money gas companies like to price at the ability of the consumer to bear it... prices go down when the gas price story becomes a national media issue... the logic they have used historically of justifying gas pricing on replacement production cost is BS because it is based on unmeasurable future expectations, whether they are locical or not....its just an excuse to be able to price gouge in heavy demand (summer). I sure wish our "friends" in Iraq would thank us by ramping up production and make this a non issue for many years.

Are we talking about an "on the water price" or at the pump price? If $3.00 is an "at the pump price" I will be purchasing a bike an a set of oars for my on and off water transportation.

Re: What Will $3.00+ Gas Do To Your Boating

Sorry guys, I only gas up on the trailer, havent bought gas at a Marina in 4 years. Only have a 22ft boat, but it gets me to the grouper. Sounds like I should have bought a sail instead of a new 225hp outboard. But I agree with everyone else, I think all my passangers will need to have there wallets in hand before boarding!!!!!

Re: What Will $3.00+ Gas Do To Your Boating

Gas here costs >$4USD / gallon. Of course an increase changes my boating habits, as it will many other habits. Already, a major consideration is fuel consumption on trips. Much as I love it, boating is not essential to survive and it has to fit into the budget to some degree, even though I may go 'overboard' from time to time. The truth is, I would be boating a lot more now if fuel was cheaper. I don't have the heart to invite someone on the water and then ask for a 'donation'. But thats just me.
