Don't be mean, Bob. ;)

Competition is always best when there are multiple competitors. But there is something to be said about a level playing field too. It's kinda like the IROC races where everyone has pretty much the same thing and it's man more than machine that makes it a race.

Hurt Mercury Racing? I doubt it, I've always considered them to be in a league of their own. I don't know much about Mercury Racing when OMC was around but I would think the only OMC product that competed with Mercury Racing was it's V8 outboards, but I could be wrong. Mercury Racing has competition in the form of smaller companies that build high performance engines (ie: Sterling, Ilmor, and Teague to name a few). Mercury Racing engines are very expensive, actually all of the stuff they sell is expensive, but it comes with a warranty and you really can get into high performance boating unless you have deep pockets to begin with. Mercury Racing also has competition with the outdrives they sell, but few companies actually create their own drive and transom assembly, most just improve Bravo's. They also have competition when it comes to the propellers they make, companies like Hydromotive and Herring make high performance propellers. They have competition, just not in the form of a large rival company.

If it's worth it to them they'd get busy and make a hypo engine that can satisfy the emission requirements.
