I just got my 79' johnson 4 hp seahorse running thanks to all of you that put your two cents in. Now a guy across the street want's it.
What would be a fair price for the motor?
model # 4w79d it's clean as a whistle but shows its age a little such as scratches and scrapes but everything work great.
Thanks for any help
BASSONTAP

Offer it to him for what you have into it (your labor aside, unless you are a pro).

I have only about 50 dollars invested in it...that seem a little cheap, but the motor was given to me because they thought it was toast.
BASSONTAP

Re: what will it sell for?

Pricing is an interesting issue. It's a matter of attitude as much as "real" value of the motor. Hobbyists will often sell or trade motors well below their potential retail value -- idea is not to profit, just to sort of break even on money actually invested.

There is nothing wrong with advertising and selling a motor for more than you paid for it, but there are no hard and fast benchmarks to go by. It sounds like you can probably make some money or yours, if you want to do that.

not trying to pull your chain -- just isn't anything, really, in the way of a meaningful price range (something like $25 to $300 wouldn't mean much). Check the local papers, penny-saver ads, etc. for something comparable.

Bassontap,

Motors of that size resale is dependent on how much the buyer wants or needs the motor. You say he lives across the street. You might ask between your investment to 2x investment $50-$100 if you just want to get rid of it. If this is a potential fishing partner you might let him have it for your investment with the understanding he invites you along every now and then. No matter what I would make sure he understands that when he buys it its his and its as is with no gauranttees, I have seen to many arguments between friends over this. Hope this is helpful.

If selling price is that big a deal, go to the Antique Outboard Motor Club @ www.aomci.org/ and see what they say it's worth.

c/6

Hooty

You may check www.ebay.com, look for current and completed auctions. Unless it's a friend things are worth what someone is willing to pay for it

C
