I was told by a dealer that if you buy a new outboard, it will void the warranty if you install it yourself. He said it must be a certified mechanic in a certified shop. Does any one know if this is true? He also said that these new 4-strokes have a built in memory to tell the company everything you did or did not do to it. Any thoughts???

Don'tknow about your first question but it just doesn't seem like it would be true, unless they could show that you did something drastically wrong with the installation. As far as the second question, I believe a lot more than 4 strokes have that memory featue in their computers.

I don't know about the warranty question buy I suspect the warranty would be good unless you did something to cause a failure by installing the motor yourself.

The new efi merc four-strokes keep a detailed history in the engine computer's memory. For example they keep a log of total hours running time at each RPM range and the number of times and time spent on the rev limiter.

For example if you installed the engine yourself and then the power head blew up the dealer would likely check this to see if the engine had been over-revved. If it was it would be attributed to an incorrect set-up by the installer.

Warranty covers any problems that are due to a manufacturing fault. Adjustments are not warranty items.

If you mis-adjust or somehow not rig a motor correctly, any damage would not be covered by the factory. You would not believe the number of folks who did not put oil in their 4-stroke before they started it up.

Well I wounder where the hp break is on the installation , if I buy a 15hp and go to the lake does the dealer have to come and put it on my boat ? On the second question all newer 4stk and 2stk ( EFI/DFI )use some form of ECU/EMM to control fuel and ign ,all this ECU/EMM'S record such things as engine temps ,oil pressures, over rev's , rpm profiles and also count how many times a sensor has failed or recorded a fault.

****,

It's a different story for a portable like a 15 hp. Those engines are self contained.

However, if you do not follow break in instructions-you're liable.

MOST MANUFACTURERS HAVE STOPPED THE SELLING OF BOXED MOTORS TO ANY ONE FOR SEVERAL REASONS INCLUDING BUT NOT LIMITED TO THE FACT THAT MOST PEOPLE DO NOT HAVE THE KNOWLEDGE OR THE SPECIAL TOOLS REQUIRED TO DO THE JOB RIGHT SAVING A FEW HUNDRED BUCKS ON RIGGING TO WIND UP WITH A BOAT-MOTOR PACKAGE THAT EITHER DOES NOT PERFORM PROPERLY OR FAILS COMPLETELY IS NOT WORTH IT ESPECIALLY WHEN YOU COULD BE HAVING TO PAY FOR REPAIRS OUT OF POCKET AS FAR AS SMALL MOTORS SUCH AS A 15 H.P. IT SHOULD STILL BE UNCRATED AND SETUP AND RAN BEFORE THE CUSTOMER TAKES DELIVERY

I am going to do mine my self just make sure you do a static load when adjusting everything. That means with the engine off turning the prop by hand.
