I'm just wondering what would be a good make and model for a 17ft basstracker boat there's some lakes over here in Ca that do not allow old two strokes in them.
I would like to change the engine out some day so that i could be able to hit all the lakes.

What is the boat rated for?

The new e-tec Evinrudes are two stroke, thus lighter than most four strokes and are actually cleaner. CARB certified.

I don't know whats its rated for but it has a 45 hp on it right now. I noticed on the new basstracker boats they only put a 25 hp 4 stroke merc on there's

You have to be a little bit careful with four strokes. They are heavier, horsepower is one thing, weight is crucial too.

Basstracker was/is notorious for putting marginal power on their boats to keep the package price down.

Look around, on your boat for a metallic tag that is yellow and silver. That tag will have the max. HP rating on it. As I recall, the TX series (17 footer) Trackers were rated for 75 max. A 75 Four Stroke would be far too heavy. So would a 75 e-tec for that matter.

A 50 or 60 e-tec would be perfect for that boat. I might go with the 50 since it basically the same engine as the 60, yet far cheaper. By all means, go the 60, if you can. It weighs the same. Plus, either would run rings around that older Merc. "Classic" 45.

That old Merc. has some value. They were very smooth running engines. Many folks desire them.

Kelley Blue Book can give you an average of value. e-bay can also give you some idea.

The e-tec's aren't cheap. There are some deals here on iboats though. Go to the top of the page and look under the "Boat Motors" tab (3rd from left).

http://www.boatmotors.com/rebuilt_outboard_motors/

You will need all new controls.

I lived in Hemet. Where are you boating? Has that lake down near Temecula been finished ? I used to drive through where it was supposed to be going.

There are no lakes in California that prohibit 2-stroke motors.
A few lakes will restrict motors when water quality is poor.
Many lakes restrict the number of motors, of all kinds, on some days.
Look up California Boating on the internet, before spending money on a new motor.

I've got the Basstracker catologue right here in front of me. They really must want to make cheap prices on these. The Proteam 175, which is a 17 footer, is offered w/ a 9.9, 25, 40, 50, 60,75. Your boat is probably one of these or a similar version. I would say a 50 would move it out just fine.

They do prohibit at all times some types of two strokes, non-direct injected in Lakes Tahoe, Cascade, Fallen Leaf, Echo, San Pablo Reservoir, Diamond Valley Lake, and Lake Skinner
just to name a few.
Direct injected 2stroke engines manufactured after 1999 are Ok, such as Mercury Optimax, Evinrude E-tec, Yamaha HPDI
etc.
