What would be best choice?

I currently have an 85HP Force O/B on my boat, (what it came with new), it runs great but I was just thinking that if I ever need a new motor what would I get. The boat is rated for max of 90HP, would 5HP make that much of a difference? I like the 4 stroke motors, but they seem huge. Is there a 90HP motor that stands head & shoulders above the rest? I want to go as fast as possible & I know the prop has a lot to do with that, but if the HP isn't getting to the prop, the top of the line prop won't make much of a difference. Just looking for opinions.

Re: What would be best choice?

There are several very good 90HP 4 stroke outboards available, but they are pretty heavy compared to 90HP 2 strokes, like 400+LB compared to 300+LB. That 100 LB can make a big difference in boat handling.

If you want to go to a 4 stroke I would recommend a 70-75 Hp. I personally really liked my Suzuki DF70 on my Boston Whaler (rated for 100HP).

A Johnson/Evinrude 90 will run circles around your Force and are great motors.

Being Force outboards were powerhead rated you engine is comparable to a new ~75hp engine in power. That said, if you want a 90 I'd either look to the Etec 90 or the new Suzuki DF90A. I just took a ride in a boat with the new 2010 DF90A and was VERY impressed with the power output. The holeshot left a big smile on my face as it felt as strong if not stronger out of the hole than my 90hp V4 I had on a similar boat, and that old 90 V4 is a torque monster. Those 2 are the lightest in the current 90hp class. Etec 320 , Suzuki 341

Yeah sucks doesn't it? Fortunately used ones are pretty reasonable. The best motor deals are usually on ones still attached to bombed-out boats.
