What would pull out rivets and is my boat junk?

Just flip the boat upside down and work on it from the outside unless you're going to use solid rivets.

I suspect the damage done to your boat was done by something much heavier than a person walking around in it out of water. I suspect it was done by the freeze/thaw cycle of collected storm water or just too darn much storm water being trapped in the boat.

I think the thinnest your hull material would be is .043, which is the norm for small jons. I'd use .063 for the patches.

Re: What would pull out rivets and is my boat junk?

Update: Went to the doctor yesterday and my arm is now out of the sling from my broken collar bone. Now I can start working to address some of the great feedback you all have given me. I bought a wire brush for my drill to start prepping some of the metal for some JB Weld around some of the holes and also to try and get some of this old Marine Tex off. They had fine and coarse bristles, but they were out of the fine ones. Will course be too hard and wear a hole in my boat, do I just need to be gentle, or are these silly questions?

You'll be fine with the coarse if it's just going to be in a drill, but you should've picked up a half dozen of them instead of just one... those things wear out pretty quick. Don't worry about being gentle, it's going to take some effort to get that junk off of there.

If the wire cup doesn't work try using a sharp wood chisel like a scraper, but be careful with it and cut away from yourself and don't get any body parts in front of the chisel.

So I started drilling out some rivets, but some I felt like were going off center of the rivet and I am afraid I am going to drill a larger hole in the boat. Advice? Here is some of my handiwork. You can see from the last picture that I tried drilling one of the steel bolts with minimal success.I am using a titanium bit, but am afraid to push too hard at high rpm for fear of it slipping and putting a hole in the boat.

Grinding the rivet heads off will be easier and leave just the hole where the rivet was. A carborundom disc in an angle grinder, drill, or dremmel tool will be your best bet.

If you are going to drill rivets, mark the center with a center punch, drill a small hole 1/8" or less then follow with the exact size you need. Sometimes I will drill the head off and leave the rivet to be punched out.

On the bolts I would grind then off or wrench them if possible. Drilling those will be very hard and you will end up with offset of large holes. My .02

Where can I find such a disc? I checked amazon, home depot, and harbor freight. Didn't see anything in Google shopping either.

Good idea about the hole punch! So it definitely seems grinding is my only/best option for the steel bolts. Thanks so much guys for your feedback on this. I consider myself somewhat handy in that I can usually complete a project, I just don't often think from a handyman perspective so I do things the long way or it takes me exponentially longer than someone with a little skill.

I have found the link on where to get rivets from elsewhere on this site, http://www.rivetsonline.com/rivets-en/blind-rivets-en/closed-end-blind-rivets.html and that I should get aluminum closed end rivets that are 1/4". But I don't see any in that size without a steel shank. Am I not in the right place?

So I sold this boat last night after getting a great deal on another boat. Is there a way I can delete this thread, or does it just stick around? Thanks for all your help -I will be using it on the new boat!

You may PM a mod & ask them to close it. Then there will be no more posts allowed, although it will still be out there. If for some reason you want or need to post anything here again, you PM a mod & ask them to re-open it.

Closed is about the only way for you to stop being notified of new posts, because the system won't allow them. Otherwise as the original poster (OP) next to your user name, you won't be able to unsubscribe to stop getting post notices.

At least that is how I think the system works, basically, kinda, sorta.....

You can also edit the title of the thread still, I think, if you wanted to change the title.

At the bottom of your 1st post:

Click edit post at the bottom right corner of your post's 'window'

Click Go Advanced @bottom right when the edit window opens

When the advanced editing window opens, above it at the top, a text box should contain your thread's title, just edit it to whatever you think it should be.

But don't discount the value of the Q&As posted in this thread. They may be of value to someone else that has rivet & hull damage.

Start a new thread for your new boat when you pick it up. Edit your last post above to include a link to your new boat, esp if it is going into dry dock for some tune-up, touch-up or resto work. Again, it can be helpful to others....

Congrats on getting a new (to you) boat:)
