What would you do?

Hi all,

I'm new here but have lurked for a while now. I am considering buying a boat that has had the majority of its power train removed (why I don't know). The boat is a 1997 Glastron GS225 and pictures can be found HERE. The seller is asking under $2k and is motivated to get rid of it.

Should I run or could this boat be resurrected for less than it's worth? I am open to considering another brand powertrain transplant if that is possible.

What would you do?

Thanks in advance,
Michael

Personally unless you have a lower unit and a motor laying around, I'd figure how much it would cost you to repower the boat, add it to what they are asking for the boat and shop around for that cost and see what's out there. I'll bet you can find something already powered and ready for a comparable cost.

That's me though, and that's my two cents worth:). Hope it helps.

Good luck in your decision

Motivated? Hmmm Maybe an offer of $1500 would fly. Boat seems fro picturs to be in good shape. Cost wise it will be expensive to replace engine and drive. You doing the work of course will save you thousands. Check out prices of everything you need. Might be worth it but that you have to decide. I would personally want to be on the water sooner than that and look for something in the 8 grand range that is water ready.

Pretty boat, but it looks like alot of work to me. If it had sentimental value and you liked doing that sort of thing then maybe, otherwise keep looking.

Re: What would you do?

Well I already have an 89' Four Winns so this would be an "upgrade" in lieu of buying a new trailer for the FW. I can get my lake fix on that but 11k is pretty tough to swallow when my ultimate goal is a full inboard ski/wakeboard boat.

Any ideas where to look for an affordable power train? I found a complete 4.3L V6 with out drive in a wrecked boat for $2k. Would that be too underpowered though?

I do have the engine and transmission out of a 79' Correct Craft Southwind (351 inboard). I don't suppose that could be used (maybe as a long block?)

HMMMM. Nice looking boat. For what you want to do, need some power. I think the 4.3 might be a found to be underpowered. I think I would keep looking. A 12 year old boat with no motor or outdrive: My opinion, he should almost give it to you.

Thanks for the input everyone. This was about what I was thinking too. For the $12k (complete motor plus boat/trailer) it would take for a new motor and outdrive, I could buy a nice malibu, supra, nautique etc.

I guess I will make an offer on the trailer and put it under my existing boat. :)

Hey, we're not saying don't do it! We're just saying don't pay $2k for the hull. You should PM Bubba1235. He takes on projects like this often and might have some ideas on how to repower more cheaply.

No way is it $11K to repower though. With all due respect to Bt. Doctur (definitely deserves respect), I would look for a VP I/O unit and almost any V8 to go with it . . . Still the entire boat would be in the neighborhood of $10K when all is said and done.

Re: What would you do?

What would you guys think of transplanting the engine and out drive from a 1989 Four Winns 200 Horizon? The motor is a 350 chevy with OMC outdrive. It would be sad to ruin a working boat, but it would also be tough to just trash a 1997 hull for just the trailer...what to do...

I wouldn't do it unless the FourWinns was rotted out.

There's a reason its in the shape it is now-----are you catching on? Offer to take the boat if he pays YOU the $2000. Some junk yards won't take boats. You would have to carve it up in small indistinguishable pieces before getting past the gate.
