I believe it's a 1972 model. A great year, particularly since the best mallard duck caller who ever lived was born in that year. :p It was also the johnson anniversary year I heard. A nice motor, if I ever find one like that reasonable I'm going to have it.

So it is still using points? The people bought it when they bought a canoe, and her husband "thinks" it needs work.. I can pick it up for $50.

Yup, still uses points, and has the standard universal magneto. If it turns over and has compression, snap it up at that price. Even if you just sold a couple of parts from it, you'd get your money back. Odds are, though, as clean as it looks, it'll probably be a runner without too much work.

Outstanding outboard, frankly.

Looks like my 20 and 25. both '72s. If you don't take it, I will. Let me know
where it is.
Check the serial no on the transom mount tag. I don't recognise the part sticking out of the end of the tiller. Could be stop or safety stop?
I'd still take it.

$50! Grab it as fast as you can! I could sell those all day up here for $450 a pop running.

Yea, for that price, consider it a steal. These are great motors and will offer lots of years of good service. It looks like a nice motor too.

I'd ask more than that. buy it. If you don't like it sell it. The lower unit is worth $300-400 CDN.

You could get $300-$400 for the LU down there??? I've never tried to sell one separately but couldn't imagine getting more than $100-$150 up here for one. It's the same 22 cu in engine as all the 18's and 20's and 25's is it not? LU's should be plentiful. Granted I do seem to run out of them on my 18's... Hmmm...

You ever tried to just buy a lower unit? Its cheaper to buy the entire parts motor in most cases, but people looking for just the lower unit don't often want the hassel of dealing with the rest of the motor. That lower unit was used with little modification until 1985. Hell of a deal for $50. I'd sell it running for $600.

Of course, I'm on the door step of Toronto where most of the wealthy Muskoka cottagers come from.

Does anyone know what that funky-looking thing is on the end of that tiller grip?

That is a replacement grip that accommodated an aluminum extension handle that fitted over the cylinder at the end.

That's a lot of motor for a canoe...did they make mention of what type of canoe? I know people have used "kickers" on canoes, but a 20 HP is a bit out of the range of a kicker! They have lots of power.

Just curious!

Heck no, I've never tried to buy a LU publicly. I only get them at swap meets for $20-$40 each or so :)

Re: What year 20hp does this look like?

What Ezeke said! Aw man, he beat me to it ... I just love outboard motor trivia!

The end piece on the replacement grip is basically a metal nipple that is about 3/4" in diameter. If I remember correctly, there is a spring loaded ball in it, which snaps into a hole in the hollow aluminum extension handle. To remove the handle, you depress the ball through the hole on the handle, and pull it off.

I used to see these handles alot in the sixties and seventies, but haven't in a long time. Most people seemed to use them so they could sit further forward in the boat for weight distribution. Some would use the extensions to stand up while steering. In either case, the handles worked pretty well at planing speeds, when small movements of the tiller would turn the boat adequately, but not so well at slow speeds.

The only equivalent of these handles that I have seen lately, are designed for trolling motors. I have one and use it on my 6hp Johnson kicker, but I don't recommend them for anything other than a small engine on a large boat (slow operation), because they aren't very strong.

PS: The front applique is just like the one that is on my 1972 Johnson 65hp, but I can't tell from the pic if is says "50th Anniversary Series" on it. If you remember that being on the applique, you at least have a 1972 hood. If you look on the port side of the transom bracket and find a data plate with the model number "20R72R" or "20RL72R," you have the 1972 model engine.

hard to tell, looks just like my 68 except my throttle handle grip is ribbed and doesn't have the extension. Shift lever looks exactly the same as well. But no matter what, buy it!
