Re: What year 20hp does this look like?
What Ezeke said! Aw man, he beat me to it ... I just love outboard motor trivia!
The end piece on the replacement grip is basically a metal nipple that is about 3/4" in diameter. If I remember correctly, there is a spring loaded ball in it, which snaps into a hole in the hollow aluminum extension handle. To remove the handle, you depress the ball through the hole on the handle, and pull it off.
I used to see these handles alot in the sixties and seventies, but haven't in a long time. Most people seemed to use them so they could sit further forward in the boat for weight distribution. Some would use the extensions to stand up while steering. In either case, the handles worked pretty well at planing speeds, when small movements of the tiller would turn the boat adequately, but not so well at slow speeds.
The only equivalent of these handles that I have seen lately, are designed for trolling motors. I have one and use it on my 6hp Johnson kicker, but I don't recommend them for anything other than a small engine on a large boat (slow operation), because they aren't very strong.
PS: The front applique is just like the one that is on my 1972 Johnson 65hp, but I can't tell from the pic if is says "50th Anniversary Series" on it. If you remember that being on the applique, you at least have a 1972 hood. If you look on the port side of the transom bracket and find a data plate with the model number "20R72R" or "20RL72R," you have the 1972 model engine.
