What year and HP is this motor

I am told the serial number is 4048399 and the lady has no idea what it is except that it is a mercury outboard motor. Before I take a long drive I would like to know more. Can you tell me the year and HP????

Very hard to tell without the HP. See if the lady can take a look at the hood on the motor and find any info. Do we know if this is a large or small motor, size wise.

From what I can find, this would be a 1974 65 horsepower. I may be off the mark on this one, so verify the horsepower if you can.<br /><br />Good luck!

The lady said the only thing on the hood was Mercury Marine. The boat it was on is a 12 ft catamaran scat cat sport boat that has a max hp rating of 25 so I am assumining it is 25 or less hp

Anyone have any other thoughts on what this motor year and HP is. I am supposed to go and get it tonight, it is a 50 mile drive hate to make that trip totaly in the dark as to what I am going to see.

well acording to mercurypartsexpress.com its a 3 cylinder motor... cause i looked up the pistons and crank shaft, and it has 3 pistons and 3 connect rods....... doesnt give the year, but its after 1980 because mercurypartsexpress.com doesnt handle motors before 1980...... <br /><br />dude suck it up and go check it out... or give ME her address.....

Thank you, all you guys are good, thanks again<br /><br />I have the motor home, it is a basket case, the lower unit was off and it came with several loose rods and a bag full of parts. <br /><br />On the airbox cover it said 1979 mercury 70 hp<br />It is a 3 clyinder, with 2 carbs and a 2 blade prop<br /> <br />My first stop will be the library to get a manual<br /><br />I need all the advice you can offer, where should I start to see if it is any good. ???

Sounds like you have a big project ahead of you on this one. If you need advice or parts, just ask.. Is the motor intact and these are just spare parts or is it disassemled?

The motor appears intact as far as I can tell. The PO removed the lower unit for some reason and I do not know why.<br />I removed the plugs and squirted some mystery oil in each cylinder. The motor is not siezed. Many wires are disconnected.<br />The manual I have talks about special testers for the coils etc. All I have is a digital multimeter.<br />The PO son (14 years old) said his dad could not get it started and was working on it. It has been sitting for many years in a garage all covered in grime, dirt and dust.<br />The two cowl halves are supposed to connect in front with some kind of clamp but the ears are broken off and it was more or less held together with twisted wire. <br />Should I start a new post on the troubleshooting of this engine?

Bill,<br /><br />Sounds like a heck of alot of motor for a 12' catamaran!<br /><br />If you can confirm that this is a late 70's 70hp, and you decide you want to part it out instead of rebuild, I may be interested in some parts.

Wow this had got great compression I can barely turn it over by hand.<br />When I get it going I would be interested in swapping it for a smaller motor around 30-40 hp<br />I am going to start a new post about fixing it
