What year is it? Carb problems?

I got this motor from a friend a few weeks back (18hp Sea Horse). Have managed to unseize the pistons. It runs, but not long and not too well. I am looking for a carb kit but haven't been able to find one for this engine... I live in Ottawa and would like to find one in the area but have come up empty handed so far. Does anyone know of a place that would have them available around here? The number on the carb itself is 376404. Thanks.

I guess i would also need to know the year of the motor. I have been unable to locate the serial number. The one from the "carrying handle" has fallen off. Where else would it be located?

I'm not sure about motors of that vintage, but check on the engine block for a quarter-sized plug. The later ones have the serial # and often model number stamped there.

Brent

The reason why i think it's the carb is because there is gas leaking from what looks like the slow speed mixture knob. Could i possibly be running the wrong fuel/oil mixture. It's about 24:1 but i have also been told 32:1 and 16:1.

You probably ought to do a compression check before you spend a lot of time or money on that motor due to the seized piston. It will give you some idea of the condition of the rings.

239018 does not come up to any Johnson/Evinrude model or year. Look for another number that could be the model number.

how do i go about checking the compression on a pull start motor? My friend has a gauge I can use, does it matter how hard I pull the cord? What is the compression suppose to be for this kind of engine? As for the serial/model # I have looked everywhere. Is there some place it could be that I am overlooking(other than the handle and the silver plug on the crankcase)?

The plate and the quarter sized plug would be the only places I know for the serial number. Since you have the number off the carb, Napa Auto parts should be able to get you a rebuild kit or your Johnson Dealer. I am not sure if you have Napa there, but hopefully.

Remove all the spark plugs, insert the gauge, and give it a few pulls until the gauge "tops out". Smaller engines seem to need more pulls on larger guages. Your looking for no more than 10% variation between cylinders, and ~100psi or more. The actual reading isn't that important on 2-strokes, mainly the balance.
Decarbonizing (search here for 'decarb') and warming the engine will bring your numbers up.

Oh, I've never got anything but blank stares from UAP/NAPA stores (which are different from NAPA stores) when I've asked them about marine parts. Plenty of places on the internet have the same stock though.

You might be able to narrow the years of your engine by looks from The Old OMC Site.

Good luck!
