What year is it?

First visit here....hope I am doing this right!? Purchased this wonderful boat in 1993. It is a 15' Starcraft American. We had the top custom made (back drop and side curtains, too). Put a live well in it and have enjoyed a very nice fishing boat. My husband is going to have heart surgery and we need to let the boat go. We have no clue what year it is. The serial number is 1010387. I am sure I don't need to say how wonderful the hull is on this boat. It really takes the wake. It also has the greatest one peice curve windsheild. Do any of you know what year it may be? Don't know where to begin with a price. Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.

Well , I am so sorry you have to let the boat go for this reason....the last two digits of the HIN (hull identification numbers) usually on the right rear of the boat embedded in the fibreglass will tell you the year...you gave a serial number....if that number was actually the HIN , then it is a 1987 vintage boat.I hope this helps ,and best of luck with your struggles.

Thank you so much. I will look for it there. We hate to part with it too ...but we have great fishin' tails with it ...so it has all been good.

Re: What year is it?

the motor looks to be a 1991 or 1992.

The boat looks to be pre-1973, so it won't have a hull id number.

The year should be listed on the registration card or title.

You are right on the motor. It belonged to my father. It is a 92. He passed away before being able to use it but only about 30 hr. He was proud of that motor! We kind of thought the boat would be around that year... but there was no title only a registration and it is not there. Would the Secretary of State be able to search it? You must know the older boats pretty good? Thank you for the help.

That Force motor is going to hurt your resale. They are no longer made and parts are getting harder to find and many people know this and avoid them. I think you've got a $1500 rig there, tops. And you are really going to need to able to demonstrate that it runs. If it's been sitting for a while and you were hoping to just sell it as is you're looking at more like $750.

That is good information. We did not know about the Force. It does run great and we have no problem showing that. Thank you for sharing your thoughts on value. What is hard is knowing that it is worth more to us than anyone! We knew when we had the top custom that we would never get money back out of it. It is like a vehicle ..never an investment! But it is what it is and we had great times with it. Do you agree with the year of the boat being around '73? Would we be better off to sell the boat and motor separate? What a great help all of you have been. I am so glad I found such a wealth of info!

Re: What year is it?

Definitely don't separate. The boat has little to NO value on it's own. And being a Force, the motor has a diminished value on it's as well. However, as a good running package together...there's value.

Take lots of nice large pictures. Host them on a photo site like photobucket.com and link to them from your craigslist ad. You can do that instead of limiting yourself to the tiny pics CL resizes them to. A video of it on the water running would help tremendously as would an offer of a sea trial as a condition of sale (notice how I worded that to eliminate tire kickers). Those things helped me sell a boat I thought I'd get less than $1500 for $2250 this fall. You're at the height of the season. If you aren't in a hurry, list it for $2500 and see what interest you have. Good luck.

I have never heard of that web site for pictures. That is great! Although there is no way to tell what year the boat is for sure ...I have learned a lot from everyone.
I will list it for sale this week. Funny you mention tire kickers.... that is what we would have in this area. We live in an area that has many many small lakes. We never use them.....too funny...
How do you word the add if you don't know what year the boat is? I don't want to mis-lead anyone ...but the pics should tell the story ..right?
Thank you again.....most helpful

Re: What year is it?

Ask whatever agency in your state registers boats. With the registration number, they should able to look up the info.

Not everyone will look down their noses at a Force outboard, so don't price the boat too low.

Re: What year is it?

NYBo,
Good news regarding the motor! Thank you so very much. We had no clue that they no longer made them. This motor has very low hours on it. My dad purchased it new and then took ill and it only had about 30 hrs on it. We only used it to run us in and out to fishing spots as we had a smaller motor to fish with. It really runs great.
I will contact the Secretary of State. We wondered about that ...
Thank you again for your help.
