What year is my 25h.p. johnson

I have an older 25 hp johnson and I was wondering if anybody knows what year it is. The model # is 25R74M and the serial # is E4010719.Also it is stuck in forward and wont go in neutral or reverse,what could be the problem....Thanks for youre help.

hey gluck. i havnt looked up your model #, but it should be a 1974 (thats what the 74 means, no?) my 25hp johnson 1972 has the "72" in the model #. anyways, how does the lower unit oil look? nice and clean or cloudy/rusty/non-existent. could be several things. broken shifter lever. broken shifter rod. seized lower unit. give us some more info on the exact problem. try removing the shifter rod disconnect door and see if everything looks good. if the connecter moves with your shifter lever then the problem is probably in the lower unit itself. not a big job. let us know.<br />LM

Thanks for the help everyone i appreciate it.thats what year I thought it was because of the 74 in the number but i wasnt sure.Also i'm gonna be taking it apart this weekend and I will let you guys know how it looks.Thanks again
