Hi!
I newly got this Johnson outboard from a friend of mine. I believe it is a 60-something but not quite sure of what year. The Model number is RD28B and the SN number is B102762 It has pull start and man gear shift

Thanks!
-G-

Thats a 1966 model. As you probably already know, these are great old motors. Heaps of here have big twins, so there is a huge knowledge base for them.

If you have only just got her, I would suggest a Carb rebuild and replace the water pump. Fuel mix is 50:1 of regular gas to your prefered tc-w3 oil.

another thing to watch for is the prop hub, if it is an old prop, it may slip, and need replacing.

Hi!
Thanks for quick service. I have tried to fire her up but with no results. There are several things that need to be taken care of.... Luckily it has run in freshwater all her life. For the last 20-25 years it has been stored in a dry barn.
I´ll update with pics and question as my project develops.

(...and to lark2004. I´ll hope to get get it complete to the next season. Since I´ll have 9 outboards from 3-115 hp, 1956-1988 pluss different things on 2 and 4 wheels... I won´t be out of work in the near future...:))

-G-

read this post

http://www.iboats.com/cgi-bin/ubb/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=36;t=000001

and get a manual. you will need it to get everything set correctly.

Also check your coils. They are under the flywheel. You will need a harmonic balancer puller to get it off, the type with three arms for the bolts to go through. Do a seach on the forums for bigtwin flywheel.

The old coils crack with age and fail to prodice a spark. New coils are easily sourced and are cheap.

Check the points gap while your in there, it should be .020"

When the fly wheel goes back on, the nut needs to be torqued down to 105 ft/lbs. No exceptions. If you don't, the flywheel key will shear off and then it won't work.

Re: What year is my 40hp bigtwin

Hello!

I have also the same model, RD28b, serial b102775, with pull start and manual gears.

I have problems to get it started. After pressed this fuel pump on fuel line once and bit more, fuel starts to leak from garb. When pulling, sometimes it starts sometimes not. If it starts it rews very high rpm for a while and the stops. if I then try to start again, fuel is still coming out from garb and plugs are wet on fuel. Is there any easy way to get it run normal?

If I need to buy manual, which will be the correct one?
