what year is my Canadian made merc 50 ?

I got a blue striped 50 merc with electric start, tilt and trim....made in Mississagua, Canada, S/N ....7198975. Checked with several of the charts but can only get as close as guessing it was made between 1980 and 85.

I had the identical motor, mine was a 1980.
Ser. # charts I can find show 711**** as 1978, 712**** as 1979, 714**** as 1980/81 but stop there.
Was '81 perhaps last year for 4 cyl. 50HP's??
I think the blue band you (and I) have was only used for '80/'81, changed in 1982. Not positive on that,
I have that I.D. chart somewhere on this 'puter, I'll try to find it.

That thing was an awesome old workhorse, took a pounding for 5 years I had it and still ran
like a top. Only reason I let go of it was a guy traded me even-up for a 1979 4 cyl. 80 H.P..
I couldn't resist!! As Tim the Tool Man always grunted "HOO... HOO..., MORE POWER!!!"

thanks cyber....I just boat this motor and an old Chrysler boat in great shape....sold my other boat with a 1986 suzuki 30 hp and if this merc can give me as much use as that motor I`ll be very pleased. I need a new battery for her maybe you can give me some advise on what to get for it such as the mca/amps and type...cranking or deep cycle ? I dont have much electronics to run other than the start, trim and tilt and a fishfinder...no lights cause I don`t boat at night.
and yes I bought it for " MORE POWER " !!!!!
