Bought my boat last summer, came with 40HP Johnson "electromatic" 2 stroke. I'm guessing it is late 60's early 70's. Serial #J2599852. It also says RKL 27A on it. Seller also gave me the original service manual, not that it helps me (I'm no mechanic). Any suggestions on were I might find basic upkeep and maintenance info would be appreciated.

Giddyup

Kramer

That's a 1965. The Ken Cook Co - www.kencook.com - has reproductions of the original factory service literature.

-John

General motor maintenance stuff would be in the user manual not so much the service manual.. I believe the addredd for kencook will supply you an copy of the original user manual for $20 bucks USD.

Its the same for pretty much all motors..

plugs, impeller (or entire pump where necessary) decarbonize it occasionally keep the wiring clean and tight.. replace any that isn't.
lubricate everything after each trip out (and before) get a grease gun and keep all the grease nipples full..

I have found that with the older outboards its not a bad idea to pull all the non powerhead bolts out once every year and lube them to stop them locking in, which is a nightmare when it happens..

just general stuff.

don't leave the carbs full of old mixture when you pack it away unless its had a stabilizer added or you will have to strip and clean your carbs the next season.

get the user manual, if you already have the service manual it will go along way to giving you the rest of the info you require.

rgds

Frank
