This is my first forum and first post - I hope I'm doing this right. I have a '60s vintage Evinrude Fisherman but no idea what the year and fuel/oil mix ratio is. The serial # is 5402B-E09574. Can anyone help me w/ this? SILWYNAN

Model 5402 is a 1964 5.5hp Evinrude. It would be best to stick with the original fuel/oil mixture of 24/1 (1qt 50/1 TCW-III oil to 6gal gas). A gasoline octane rating of 87 will be fine.

1964 was the year they switched to 50:1

That may be true, but the smaller ones even up into the early 70's should probably be run 24:1. I certainly would rather run that 5.5 on a richer mix than 50:1. Plus I think that some of the 64' models still had the bearings in them that required the 24:1 mix.

Re: What year is my Evinrude?

It'll be your choice on the mixture of course.

OMC did release a bulletin many years back that stated that "all" of their engines could use the 50/1 mixture excepting the 1957 7/5hp model..... and it was never explained fully to me why that exception existed.

However, as time went by, pertaining to engines with perfect carburetors, no fuel/air leaks, in essence no flaw of a mechanical nature that would affect the mixture..... I noticed that I was rebuilding many more engines that had the appearance (bearing wise) of running lean, and this pertained to only those engines that had the babbit type bearings. Engines that were equipped with all roller, needle, or ball bearings did not encounter this type problem.

So, although the above OMC bullletin existed, in time the general practice pertaining to the 50/1 mixture was to use it only on engines that incorporated needle, roller, or ball bearings on every rotating/moving part.

The 1964 5.5hp model has babbit type main bearings, hence my advice to stick with the 24/1 mixture.

It might last forever on the 50/1 mixture BUT is it worth the risk?

Thanks for the input. No - I'd rather play it safe though I'm not looking forward to the smoke at 24:1. But thanks to all for taking the time looking this up for me. SILWYNAN
