I bought a boat a few months ago and I am just now getting around to getting it going and i cant for the life of me remember what year the guy told me the engine was. The cowl says its a 100hp V4 Evinrude but the tag on the transom mount is partially missing, all ive got are the first seven letters - J100WTL -. I checked the freeze plug but it doesnt have the model either. The tilt motor is bad and ive want to make sure ive got the right year. Thanks in advance for any advice on how to proceed.

Go to shop.evinrude.com and start looking for your model number........ the first 7 letters will be enough.

You either have a 2 wire or 3 wire motor which are easy to match.

Re: what year is my evinrude?

Thanks for the links- very helpful. So far i can see my engine is a johnson, not an evinrude like the cowl says. The WTL stands for commercial electric tilt with a long shaft. i have narrowed it down to between the years 92 and 95, but am still not sure exactly. The serial numbers were also partiallty missing. i have the first seven- G 033205 -. What i have found so far is enough to identify the trim motor but i would still like to know the exact year for future reference when stuff breaks as we all know it will.

I have another question now, does anyone know where i can find a good aftermarket trim motor? OEM#0434795 . The factory replacement is $250.00!
thanks again

Re: what year is my evinrude?

I would use 1993 as a bench, based on other known serial numbers.

The Arco 6241 motors work well. Those are very competitive; shop hard.

Re: what year is my evinrude?

I checked out the ARCO 6241 and its not the right one. The base on the one i have is similar to a triangle with three bolts. The 6241 is square with four bolts. i should say that the part#0434795 isoff a parts website and i know that sometimes they change the part numbers to make it difficult to comparison shop. Maybe this is why im having trouble matching up? I looked on the trim motor i have (still on the boat) and i cant see any numbers, either from the rust and flaking paint or the numbers are on the back side which i cant see. Im starting to wonder if i should take the old one off and check it for numbers- and what a pain it looks like thats gona be!

Re: what year is my evinrude/trim motor replacement

I found the right one(I believe) Arco 6220. part number matches #434795. Says its between years 94 and 96. Im goin with 1994. Thanks for all your help, iboats is invaluable for guys like me.
Now that thats taken care of does anyone have any suggestions on the actual replacement procedure. is there anyway around taking the engine completely off? looks like i may be able to prop the engine up as high as it goes and get to it. maybe not.:) THANKS
