what year is my merc?

I have a 50hp Merc 500 made in Canada. I cannot find anywhere I can punch in the serial number to find out what year it is. Any ideas? I went to oldmercs.com and they only give stuff on American motors, plus I don't think my merc is that old..... 80's I think. Any help would be awesome!
