What year is my motor?

My Evinrude 150XP model number is E150STLCEM, and the serial number is R08173240. I was told that this is an '89, but I want to be sure as I am getting a lot of different part numbers when I inquire about ignition components (especially stators - the one in it is a 583710 and, since it's an OMC part #, I am assuming that it's correct?). If anyone can help, I would greatly appreciate it!

Thanks, dk990496. Wow, that was fast! Is there some sort of secret decoder ring I need to read that from the serial number?

Re: What year is my motor?

It's often the case (like with yours) that the last letter is not part of the year. In your case, it's obvious because the last letter is M which isn't part of the INTRODUCES pattern. In other engines, the last letter might actually be something like S, making it a little confusing. So, you'd look at the next two - and see if that makes sense.<br /><br />As for your ignition part numbers - if this is a rebuild of some sort, the ignition part numbers might not match up with the year of the original power head. For example, my remanufactured engine has an 82 powerhead, but ignition components from a slightly different era - according to my mechanic (I don't do a lot of skilled work on the thing and take his word for stuff like this).

So I'm guessing there's another tag on the powerhead somewhere with a model and/or serial number so I can tell its age too? The numbers I supplied are from the tag on the mounting bracket. I also assume that I should be using ignition parts that match the year of the powerhead (if different than '89)? Muchas gracias for taking the time to reply!

Yes, there's a model number (same i.d. system) on the powerhead itself. I can't tell you exactly where, but it's there.<br /><br />On my motor, the mounting bracket tag is missing, so the only identifying model number is on the head.

Re: What year is my motor?

Well, I cannot find a model number anywhere on my powerhead. I do get the feeling that this may not be the original one though, as there appears to be some black paint overspray on some of the flexible black plastic tubing that contains the various groups of wires from the rectifier, stator, etc. I doubt it would come from the factory like that!

Look on top of the block above the cylinder heads. I think that's where my 115hp was. My J225 ('88) is on the exhaust cover between the cylinders.

Re: What year is my motor?

I'll take another look tonight, but I didn't see it anywhere. Now that I know (at least the bottom end) it is an '89, I've done more checking the CDI reference tables and the powerpack, coil, statator and timer base part numbers match that of an '89 "150 ST". I haven't removed the rectifier yet, but haven't been able to see any part numbers on that. It may too have been sprayed with black paint? Who knows. I'm getting ready to order six new universal coil/wire kits (CDI 183-3737). I don't think this is going to solve my problem, but a few of the coils just don't look like they're in all that good of shape. I will replace these and then, who knows. My stator just doesn't look to be dripping any potting material or anything, so I'm a little apprehensive about replacing this $265 part (Seiler has the best price I've found so far) if the one I've got is working properly. The resistance readings I took on it a few weeks ago were just slightly out-of-spec low, so I don't know whether I should be concerned or not? I am also not sure if the rectifier is responsible for my tach problems or not, and also don't know if a faulty rectifier would/could cause intermittent spark problems (unless, of course, it was overloading my stator?). Geez, maybe I should just bite the bullet and replace all of this stuff?
