Judging by that red stripe it's a 68 - 71. I think that's a four cylinder. Weight about 200??

They had a distributor CDI ignition, that's mostly electronic as there are no points.

-W

I have a 69 Merc 800 and love it. The only thing I did when I purchased it was put a new seal kit on the lower unit, water pump and housing and decarbed the hell out of it. Runs great.

thanks guys, thats what I had guess, and what I had hoped.

I guess it will have 2 carbs if its a 4 cylinder.

are the hydraulic cylinders at the bottom for tilt and trim? that would be a nice bonus!

It is supposed to have ran about a year ago, and then parked in the yard, its going to replace a worn out 50HP force, Ill bet it makes 3 times the power of a 50HP chrylser force motor.. haha

Thanks again!

Re: what year is this 80 HP merc? now with serial#

I have the motor at home now, the serial number is 2784725

it looks in rally good shape under the cowl, BUT almost very wire on th engine is corroded badly.

the insulation is just falling off, and the copper is just green and pulls apart.

i got it anyway, it was really cheap ( free!) so now I want to know if I should piece the wiring back together, or can I buy a harness?

also, will a tilt and trim system from the same vintage 115 HP work on this engine?
the engine weighs a hair over 200, maybe 230 or so.

Nathan,
I live in the historic district, behind what used to be Doc Murdocs

thanks for all of the help and advice so far, Ill no doubt have alot more questions as I dig into this.
