what year is this gearcase?

I am helping a friend with a 1981 evinrude v6 rebuild. The lower unit is definetly not the original. Is there a way of dating the gearcase?<br />Thanks<br />Rob

We are trying to indentfy the year to be sure of getting correct parts when ordering. What should we be looking at?
