I recently bought a boat with a Johnson 40 hp motor. There is no model number/serial number plate on the mounting bracket. However, I did find this number on the powerhead - J2338873. Is this the serial number, and can someone tell what is the year this motor was made.
Thanks.

Thank you RodC for your help.
However, all these references appear to use the model number to identify the year and I do not have the model number.

Sometimes we can work with the serial number. Here's what a search of Iboats turned up:
J2482442 1964
j2478300 1964
J2433629 1964
J2407606 1964

J2338873 Your one

J2344113 1970 (I'm guessing this is an error, but it might be worth checking)

So I'm guessing your 40hp is a '64 or '63. During those years, the model number was on the nameplate up on the tilt/steering bracket between the two transom clamps. Usually there's a good layer of grime there due to the breather just above it. Check it out.

If that doesn't work out, have a look at the catalogs over at:
www.old-omc.de
about '63 and '64 and see if you can tell by looks. The colours are a little off in the photos so use your imagination and focus on decals, medallions, etc.

Good luck!

Paul, you are a clever man. Are you putting together a spreadsheet of Model #'s?

1963 40HP SuperSeahorse Electramatic J2343250

P2J - No trouble!

itsippy - I really should. Usually I just search the J/E forum and this one for (in this case) J23, J24, J22, J21, etc. Johnsons seem easiest to work with. '50s and earlier Evinrudes had weird "serial" numbers but the problem doesn't seem to crop up as much. Then there's two other series - Canadian and Austrialian (Cxxxxxxx and Axxxxxxx). Things get strange again in the 80s but I think most dealers can figure out years from those serial numbers. 70s seem the worst for loosing their tags.

I really could have used your one for P2J's! Looks like he's got a '63. ;)
