I have a 50 hp johnson motor 50th anniversary edition hydro electro drive motor. Not even sure of the year... that has good compression but no spark. Anyone have a suggestion of what I can sell it for? Seems to be only an ignition problem. Thanks everyone from this newbie.

The "50th Anniversary Series" motors are 1972 Johnsons for sure. That is the year that Johnson switched from dark green lowers to Anniversary Gold (Lime Gold to us). The model should be something like 50ES72 (50 horse, Electric start, 1972) or 50ESL72 (same thing but long 20" shaft).

I currently see a 1971 Johnson 50 (1st year model) for sale on Kijiji (Toronto) for $450 and it's not sold yet (that should tell you something). All it says is "last time run 2 years ago". Does your motor have the proper remote control? Gas tank?

The 50 is a good motor and was produced through 1975 before a displacement increase brought them to 55 horses. They went on to become 60s (and even later-day 40s with the revised horsepower rating method). The early hydroshift motors are not without their liabilities though.

Definately a 1972. Most certainly only parts value. Motors like that have a hard time selling where I am. Few people will even look at it unless its running. Even at $100-200 these motors sit for months or years until someone needs the parts.

Thanks to all who responded. The model # is e50esl72 C just as TN 25 stated. Which I guess means it is a 1972 long shaft electric start motor. It does have the controls and everything was working when I took it off the boat early this week. Except for the spark. 100-200 huh?? well if someone knows anything about motors they will prolly get themselves a great deal if I sell it for that because the motor is in real nice shape. Thanks to everyone for the help. I guess to craigslist I go.
