What year mercury and Yamaha 50hp are the same?

last time I had my motor in for service the shop owner mentioned that in 1996 Yamaha and Mercury 4 strokes were identical except for cowling, paint and prop.

Can anyone verify this is true?

Was it still the same motor for mercury in 1998?

Saw a parts motor for sale cheap but not sure if it is compatible.

Not sure that all of the motor such as gearcase and electrics were identical.

gearboxs were different and on some units electrics were different unsure on 50 hp
