looks like a 56/57 , the tag should tell the tale. and yes, it can be run in salt water, just make sure you flush it out after every run.

Depends on your definition of "easy". Parts will be the biggest issue. Correct tools will be secondary. As for knowledge, I can assure you that your new friends @ Iboats will give you that, step by step, without hesitation, Like they've done for me! Welcome to the community!:)

Re: What year might this be

those motors are almost as easy as it gets to work on, and almost every part you may need can be found here on iboats, or at your local napa.
just give your friends here at the forum the info off the transom mount ( model #) and you will get all the info needed to keep the old gem running for another 50 years!

(and read the top secret file at the top of this forum!!.....it will give you a good starting point!)

If it's a 15hp, then it's a '56 model. If it's an 18hp, then it's a '57 model. The picture isn't very good so I can't tell. In '58, they changed the paint scheme on the hood so it's narrowed down.

This is a 10 hp. I am looking at this or a 58 Evinrude 10 hp sportwin. I am trying to decide which one,
Are there any differences much between the 2.

It is a 1957 according to the color of the motor cover. The '56 models were all one reddish color, the '57 was white on top and reddish on the sides like yours, and the '58 engines were reddish on top and white on the sides. Each year used a different reddish shade but they were all called Holiday Bronze.

You need the engine model number from the metal tag to veryify the year as long as someone did not play "pieces-parts" over the years.

Agreed - that's why I said '57.

Take the '57 J10 over the '58 E10. The lower units were redesigned in '58 and were weaker and more prone to failure. The '57 LU's are much tougher as they were the same as the 18hp. Plus the J10 looks better than the E10 (subjective though). Post the model # so we can be sure and I have the parts manual for it if you want it. If yes, PM me your email address and model #.

I totally agree with samo-ott. The 57 Johnson has the 5 bolt lower unit and will hold up good. It was also the same lower unit used on the 18's It'll probably hold up as long as the powerhead, if not longer. I would re-seal the lower unit for good measure and go through the ignition system. You get these two areas up to snuff, you won't have to do anything to that motor for a long time, other than change the oil in it.

The downside is the '57 10 weighs more than the '58 10.

I have all the 10s in the Johnson lineup from 55 to 58, and I have to say the 57 is my favourite.

Starting with the Evinrudes now, but the 57-58 Johnson lineup has a special place in my heart :)

I never thought about the weight before, I cant imagine its much though

Yep, the '57 Sportwin is my favorite too Chris. Yea, the weight difference comes from the 18hp lower unit, versus the 5.5hp lower unit. The '57 also had a slightly heftier midsection too.

Dealing with the extra weight will be worth your while though, when it comes to the reliability of the lower units.

Great little motor you got there. Well worth the effort to get/keep running in most cases. These two links can get you started bringing it back to life. you can get most, if not all of the consumable parts like carb kits, points & condensers, impellers, etc.... right here at ibaots. Holler if you get stuck.
