Hi, while I'm waiting for a manual for another motor I've been checking out this Mariner 5hp 6E3 S 138139
I've looked through the "Marine Engine Look-Up Guide: Mariner, for the year of it, but it does'nt seem to fit any numbers list.
I'd be lost without this iboat forum, thanx for the help you give us....

Re: What Year of Mariner 5hp???

Thankyou Dunaruna, with your info. of it being a 1984.
By checking out "1984" in the Marine Engine Look-Up Guide I see the Serial # as being between 5c M, 6E3-133012-6E3-140919. I'm wondering what the "c" stands for as it is not on my engine serial #. Thanx again

Yes, it can get a little confusing. Most charts (including the one you used) often require a bit of interpretation in conjunction with other charts. To nail down your year model, I used 4 different lists. The letters at the beginning of the serial number are descriptive, they are not associated with any particular year.

The 'M' means 'manual start'. The absense of an 'L' means it is a 15" shaft.

I cannot find any specific information regarding decoding mariner serial numbers but the very same serial number is also good for yamaha (your motor IS a yamaha). For yamaha, the C means 'tiller/remote' but that does not make any sense with a 5 hp motor. I could also mean 'commercial'.

The bottom line is, I don't know what the 'C' means.
