Re: What year?

I believe the year is a 1980. Fuel to oil is 50:1. Anything else?
just a Thought

Re: What year?

Yes, I also have another problem. I listed it in another post. For some reason, about half speed or higher, my engine has a quick jerk to it. The faster I go the more frequent it happens. (jerks are only a few seconds apart)It runs fine at low rpm's. I thought maybe it was my oil to gas ratio. I've been using 50:1. But I am a novice boater.

Re: What year?

I would want to do a compression test, if that is ok then start with new plugs, plug wires, and check distributer cap. A thorough carburator cleaning along with checking fuel pump, all fuel lines. Make sure the vent in the gas tank is operating properly. Sounds to me like it may have spark jumping to ground, or running lean in one of the cylinders...my first guess would be spark. Tho carbs get clogged very easily with 2 cycle mix. Just a Thought

Re: What year?

Thanks for the input, I'll try all of that and see where I get. I was told it may be slipping in and out of gear. Is that possible? And if the lower unit is not lubed properly could that cause it?
As I said before this was a freebie boat.
I'm not too sure he took good care of it.
(why else would he care to give it away so easily)
Once again thanks for the help!!! :D

Re: What year?

That is also a reasonable thing to check. If it is the lower unit it would likely be the clutch dog, or I guess maybe the linkage out of adjustment, or the shift cable a bit stiff. Just a Thought

Re: What year?

I am having difficulty getting the lower unit taken apart. There are 6 bolts holding on the foot. When I take those off, the foot wont come off of the lower unit.
I dont see any other bolts to hold it on.
I did get the prop off finally.
and the splines look good. There still is gear oil in it. Not sure how much, but there is some in there.
Someone at one point in time said it may be the clutch dog. Is that in the foot also?
what does it look like.
Thanks for your patience!!! :D

Re: What year?

There is 7 bolts holding the l/u on. Take the cover off that the exhaust comes out of and you will find another bolt up under there. You will unhook the shift linkage at the front below the powerhead, on the outside of intermediate houseing. Before you take the linkage off make sure that when you shift at the control box it moves all the way into gear. I had a problem in reverse gear like that one time and it turned out that a little spray lube in the shift cable fixed it. just a Thought

Re: What year?

You'll love this one!!
My shift cable has set in the weather and dry rotted and so it is cracked in some places in the back. And in one little section about an inch long on one side the shield is actually gone. So the cable is a little stiffe toward the engine where it is exposed to sunlight. But I can see the cable move and shift it into gear. Then with more throttle, when the distributor turns, the whole rod turns moving a slide over the shift linkage at the top holding it down into foward gear. So I wouldnt think it would pop out of gear there. But then again I dont know much about this stuff. :D
I will look at the exhaust thing and look for another bolt. All I have seen before was an allen screw more toward the rear end of the thing but it didnt look like it held anthing.
Thank you so much for your patience!!! :D
Novice boaters have much to learn!
OOh one more quicky,
there are two set screws above the foor one says vent the other fill, but there is still one more at the lower end of the foot that is a normal screw (not the drain screw) but what is it for? (smaller screw about inch and a half)

Re: What year?

The allen screw comes out along with another bigheaded bolt, take the trim tab and look inside for bolt #7. I would suspect that the cable is not allowing the shift cam to fully engage the shift dog, allowing it to jump in and out of gear. just a thought
