You got it right, but it isn't as obvious as one would think. For instance, a 40452 is a 1964.

As for long or short, those motors are so easy to convert from long to short and back again that there's no telling what it is now after 35 years. The only sure way to know is take a look at it. A long shaft has a 5 inch spacer between the lower unit and midsection, a short shaft does not. Easy button.

I misread the post. I thought it said "This is a 1974....", not "Is this a 1974....."
