Had a littletime on my hand sooooo.... I yanked a old 91 2 liter block from them scrap pile and split it!!:D Here you can see the sleeve in the aluminum casting and the porting. The sleeves are held in a jig and a sand cast mold is formed around them, molten aluminum is then poured in mold and allowed to harden. I have marked the transfer ports in the pictures....
I know someone will ask why I didnt repair it, it needed 3 sleeves and some welding and I got a used block cheaper...

I've been around cast-in sleeves for a very long time. I think the concept is absolutely brilliant....get the long life characteristics of cast iron, yet get light weight and thermal dissipation that only aluminum can give you (inexpensively).

Remembering the old BS lawn mower engines without sleeves, wore out in no time. All the ones I buy now are sleeved and the mower wears out before the engine even gets tired.
