Ok my nephew had purchased a boat and brought it to me to get it running( yeah). It is a 85 merc with serial#4541021. The motor will run if u give it a little starting fluid and stay running but it will not turn off with the ignition key. So I took the controls apart and found a salmon color wire and a white wire not hooked up both come from the main wireing harness. Done a compression test and it was good. I think this motor was made in the 70's but doesn't have a distributor . Any advise would be greatly appreciated. Thank u

Re: What yr merc/ wireing ?

Well first off its very hard on a 2 stroke motor to use starting fluid, it washes the 2 stroke oil off of the cylinder walls and the main crank shaft bearings, Use a bit of pre mixed gas in a spray bottle. More than likely the wires arnt used, the controller has several wires that go from it the to the instruments on the dash, and so it just depends on whats hooked up if any thing.

Once we know the year I am sure they can help you out. Several of the guys here have the charts to take the serial number and tell you, and perhaps locate a wiring diagram, but I suggest you get a manual those are very help full to trouble shoot the motor.
