I just bought a used outboard and i want to change out the water pump/impeller. I looked them up on this site and saw just the impeller or a whole repair kit. When just doing this for maintinance would it be better to buy the whole kit and do it all or is it safe to just buy the impeller and change out just that?

Depends on if anything is wrong with it. What motor are we talking about here?

Re: Whatis better when replacing the Impeller?

its a 1986 evinrude 175 hp. But I also think its a looper motor. A friend told me its possible the power head was changed out as the model number does not match the power head. All I know is its a 175 hp and a 1986-87. I finally got it to start but its over heating pretty bad. So going to try and change out the water pump and use some salt away or vinigar to clean out the water jackets. if that doesnt work im going to change the thermostats.

If it has been used in salt water, then by all means, change out the entire pump and pump some salt and lime deposit dissolving stuff through that system to get rid of gunk buildup.

I think you have a cross flow mtr as they didn't build a 175 hp looper mtr in 1986. Could you post a pic of it ??

Here is a picture of it. Click on the picture for a much larger view. The area that is throwing me off is the plate between the heads. Its on the left side of the picture. You will see a raised out area or a bubble like area between the heads and under the trim and tilt fuse box. But in this picture its just behind the one head you can see since its a side shot. On my old engine this plate was flat from top to bottom. On this one, it starts off flat and then bubbles out a few inches. This is what i was told is a signs its a Looper engine. And if they did swap out the power heads this obviously might not match the year he said it was when i bought it. I do get 1987 when i run the model number.

It's a cross flow, not looper.

Just my 2cents....If thats new to you and you dont know history, there are a couple things to do right off the bat.

--Definetly plan on replacing thermostats for sure. A pain to do, but need to be done if not proven done recently.

-- I would pull the heads (or pull/look into the cyls from the bypass covers) to view overall cyl/wall/piston condition. Same time, replace the water deflectors!

-- Full water pump/impellor

--Salt away or some other method to remove internal build-up.

-- A couple decarb cycles (details on this forum).

Run and test some more.

Thank you for all those pointers. I was going to do some of them already but I guess I should do all of them as its been sitting rfor some time and it is over heating. Thank you.
