Hi,

Was looking into a 1998 90hp Force outboard motor on craigslist, the guy said "I will take any reasonable offer", but I have no clue of what these things are worth. Can anyone help me out here and tell me the approximate fair value of this motor? Any help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
~Jay

Well it all depends on if your mechanically inclined AND if you don't mind buying replacement parts off ebay. They stopped making those about right after they made that one.

And IF you do end up buying it.......DON'T GET A SELEC manual for it!
Half of what it states is wrong.;)

Pierutrus,

Thanks for the tip on the Seloc manual, good to know, you probably just saved me hours of frustration. That aside, assuming the motor is in good running shape, what's the ballpark value? As far as being mechanically inclined, I am comfortable doing my own routine maintenance, spark plugs, lower unit oil, impeller, etc.., but I wouldn't want to attempt anything major like a rebuild. Don't really mind buying parts off ebay, do it all the time for my little 1973 Honda SL 350.

Thanks,
~Jay

Check the compression on all cylinders. Within 10 of each other is pretty good. Under $700 would be pretty good as long as you get controls with it. I had Chrysler engines and I didn't have any complaints with them.

BUYING A USED MOTOR

overall condition, condition of the place you are buying it from, usually tells you how they care for things. compression 100 + psi, and within 10% of each other, good strong blue spark, no water in the lower unit oil. look for discolored paint, (sign of over heat at
one time, also scarred up bolts, as why. have them start it. if they fail to put it in a barrell or tank, or on muffs, or in the water, to start it they don't know what they are doing. best yet is to take it for a 30 min to 1 hour test run. also if remote controlled motor, the controls should come with it.

i agree get the controls or nothing. most if it is immaculate $1,000.

Maybe I'm to skeptical, but I read "will take any reasonable offer" as I am not disclosing all problems and am hoping to get $600-700 for this thing.

Are you replacing a current force OB?

If not, don't buy one. You will save money in the long run by getting one from another manufacturer that is still supported.
