I've heard horsepower ratings of 200, 220, and 225. What makes them different from other Yamaha V6's. What fails and what do I want to change or check? The oil inj. is still working but is it a good system?

Thanks,

Chris

Re: What's a Yamaha Excel?

the excel was made several years in the late 80's or so. it was rated at 220 HP. the main difference between the excel and the proV was the ign system. the excel used a TPS to adjust timing and the rest still used a movable timer base
if I remember more Ill add it. maybe ray remembers more.

Re: What's a Yamaha Excel?

The Excell was a special performance engine built in 1987,88 and 89. It was called a 225 by most people. It had different port timing, horizantal intake and reed blocks, higher compression and a computer system with TPS and detonation sensors. The timing was controlled by the computer. The motor of choice for hot rodders and racers. Prop shaft HP was over 240 HP. It requires premium fuel to run properly.
Many race orginizations actually banned the motor due to the inability of the other brands to compete with it. It would power a fishing ready 20 Foot Allison to over 90MPH while bone stock.
A fully modified one would produce over 320 HP and dominated the drag boat racing circuit for a number of years.
Amazingly, with normal maintence it was a very reliable engine. The piston clearance was only 2.75 thousands and I have pulled them down with hundreds of hours of use to find that a new set of pistons put them right back to factory specs.
It was a horizantal intake version of the earlier V-6 Special (220 Hp) manufactored prior to 1987.
Many of the parts used in it are still being used today to hop up newer Yamahas.
Due to the lighter weight it will still outrun the 250's being built today on a lighter boat such as many of the larger bass boats.

The oil injection system has proven to be the most reliable of any manufactor today.

Re: What's a Yamaha Excel?

Wow! I bought this boat thinking a repower was the way to go for no other reason than this engine being an '87. After learning what I have through you guys, I think I'll buy the service manual and dig in and see what condition it's in. It looks like new and runs great. Spent its life on fresh water and has 885 hrs. on the guage. You mention its hi compression.. what readings do I want to see with a compression test?
I can see the shift rod and though its rusted, it doesn't appear to be coming apart. When they fail, does it happen where it can be seen just above the gearcase or does it fail inside? Is this something I want to keep an eye on or do I definately want to change this out asap?

Thanks!

Chris

Re: What's a Yamaha Excel?

I have seen them fail just under the power head. if its been a fresh water notor it may come apart. if not you will most likly have to cut the power head adapter. I have seen it both ways. if you have to cut the adapter be prepared to spend 12-15 hours with a grinder, drill, taps and oxy/acetylene. if the powerhead bolts come loose its a 3 hour operation.

Re: What's a Yamaha Excel?

Compression readings of 130-135 lbs are normal. It is also normal to see a drop of compression on the lower cylinders of up to 10 lbs from the top two. The port timing was higher on number one and two than the lower cylinders. The cc's of the chambers in the head also were different.
There were many trick ideas in the motor that HP people have included when hopping up the other models. A great combination of reliability and performance.
I have seen many in great shape with more than two thousand hours on them.
The shift shaft change is not as much a chore if only run in fresh water. By the same token, I have yet to change a fresh water one.
Get the original factory manual and keep up that older fellow.
