what's goin on with my 40h

I have a 92 40hp evinrude. It starts fine I travel about a half mile and the motor dies. It's hard to start after that and has no power. I've checked for spark, and checked the fuel lines. They are fine. would this be internal, electrical or fuel problem. I have changed the fuel filter and coil. Any suggestions!

Hello.<br />Check your cooling system. If your impeller is defective,it can over heat your engine and cause it to shut down or worse, destroy your engine.<br />Good luck.

irich, I have an internal gas tank, so there is no valve to open. <br />rolmops, I do not understand what you mean by cooling system it should be water cooled. Water pump is working fine. I never heard of impeller before. How do I check that. What do you think about maybe being a piston? I checked compression last night one cylinder was 60, the other 90. Thanks for the response, this is getting me frustrated since I can't get out fishing.

Next step in my book would be to get the manual for your engine if you do not already have one. Pull the plugs and check color/fouling etc. Check what you can by looking into the spark plug holes. If nothing obvious at that point pull the head and do some serious inspection of what you find. May be as simple as a blown head gasket or may be more serious (eg. broken ring, piston etc.). You won't know until you get in there.<br /><br />While you may also have a cooling problem I would suspect that is not the primary problem due to the results of the compression check.

Solittle is right on the money.Compression should be around 100lbs. and within 10% cylinder to cylinder.There may be other problems but motor sounds pretty tired.

Hi Mikemcm<br /><br />I would try that compression tester on something else or try another tester. However the difference between cyls are way too high. I have the same motor, in good shape, and it has 148 on lower and 150 on upper cylinder cold.
