I have an 89 Sea Nymph and I think the wiring is shot. Everything seems to work when it wants to. This winter I plan on rewiring it when I replace the wood and carpet. I bought some electrical contact cleaner but that does not seem to work. Everything is a dull gray. What should I clean it with or do you have any other suggestions? Trolling motor, fishfinder and navigation lights are working intermittently. Whats the best way to clean the fuses(glass) and fuse box?

Thaks,

Rick

If everything is going intermittent, I'd be more suspicious of the connections at the battery terminals, or the Ground than the individual components' wiring - check those out first. . . But using contact cleaner, followed with wd-40 wire dryer works quite well to clean connections.

For the cost, I'd certainly replace the fuses instead of cleaning.

Best of luck!

Are you absolutly sure the battery is being charged and completly ? Cells are not low on water and lost their capacity ?

Had a similar problem this spring. Bilge pump, finder and running lights operated unreliably. Turned out to be bad connections between the fuse and the fuse holder clips. I have the 1/4"x 1 1/4" glass fuses. I removed the fuses and took a small strip of 400 grit wet/dry sandpaper and wrapped it around the fuse end, grit side out. Sprayed contact cleaner on the fuse clips then repeatedly inserted and removed the fuse (with sandpaper)into the clips. Used the same sandpaper to clean the fuse contacts them coated everything with dielectric grease. No more problems.

As already suggested, remove and clean the battery terminals and contacts as well.

As a general rule, contact cleaner will only clean off the surface contamanents such as oils and dirt. The corrosion needs to be cleaned with light sanding or a wire wheel / brush. Once clean, make sure you coat the contacts with dielectric grease.

Be sure to check all the connections at both your batteries and fuse panel.
