I have an 84 Evinrude and was wondering what will happen when the VRO pump is starting to go out? What are some of the signs?

Hi jj6987,

I'll hope that you never have to face it because it's not fun at all. If you're lucky you may notice that the engine goes to hot or less smoke coming out but I think that in 90% of VRO-pump failure you notice the problem too late and the engine cracks down.

Happy boating!

/Tommy

jj6987
I would'nt wait for that to happen on a '84 engine. Back then they didn't have the up to date warning systems like they do now and it will be too late by the time you realize it's failed. Do yourself a favor and disconnect it now and pre-mix your own. Piece of mind goes a long way!!

In 20 years I have never seen a VRO fail on an OMC motor...but the age of your motor would cause me concern...I would replace it or unhook it and premix...just my thought

If the VRO pump starts to fail, it will reduce the flow of fuel and the engine will reduce power from the lack of fuel. The same shaft pumps both fuel and oil. One can't work or fail without the other. I've also never seen the oil end fail without the fuel end failing also. Now if you break and oil line or run out of oil, that's another thing.

I just bought a '92 Evinrude 115 for $200, VRO failure (OK, probably overpaid).

Re: Whats happens when VRO pump goes Out?

I agree with most of what Capt Ken says, but still would get rid of the VRO on a OMC product due to these other causes of failure. It just seems that these Motors have more VRO(Injection) failures than other systems, especially on the older ones. Now weather that's due to lack of maintenence, Broken lines, Water in the Tank or whatever, I prefer to eliminate any of those possibilities by pre-mixing my own. Or, if the engine will shut down with no harm done anyway, just run it till it does quit and repair the problem. Tough choice!!

Direct answer to your question in order of occurance:
1. Engine gets hot from oil starvation and blows.
2. Warning buzzer sounds incicating engine lost.

Start Premixing. Don't take the chance

A fishing buddy of mine bought a new 1995 Evinrude 120. VRO failed the 2nd year. Engine had to be rebuilt.
