I found this motor in a guy's backyard. on a stand, today. He wants me to make him an offer on it. IF it passes the compression & spark tests I'd like to have it, but I don't know what to offer him. I don't know how long it's been there, or when it last ran, but the cover is on it, & it looks clean under there. The prop is in good shape & the skeg is there, but will need replacing. I can see carb kits & water pump kit costing about $150.00 + my labor, skeg is only about $75.00. Anybody have a guess on the price to pay him?

Since you can't water test it I'd go maybe $200.00. Even if you get a decent compression test you will have no clue about the gear case. And looks under the hood does not mean much.

I can turn the prop with it in gear, so it's not "locked up". That also tells me that it's got enough compression to be worth testing.

Also, I'm sure it's a saltwater motor.

In a moment of low brain function, my buddy and I paid a man $300 for a late 80's Evinrude 90 that according to the seller ran when pulled. It was real ugly though. Looked like it had been stored in a pit full of rocks, sandpaper, and mud. Fortunately for us, the damn thing fired up immediately when we got it home and hooked up some fuel and a battery.

So anyway, yeah I'd say $300 is about right for an unverified motor. I'm dumb though and would probably go $500 if I needed to for a pretty one that I could do a compression test on especially if it had working power tilt & trim.

Thanks ya'll. I don't really "need" the motor, but hulls are REALLY easy to come by down here on the gulf coast! It's not really in my budget, but if it is able to run, it's the first step to going from a 15' angler runabout to a boat that could get the wife & I out to the deep water to do some real "big fish" fishin! The owner said somethin about takin it to the scrapyard, so I'm gonna go run the tests, at least. I'm thinkin I'll offer him about $150.00. Anybody know about what it weighs? I'll do the math & offer him 2X the scrap price, if it passes.
