whats its function?

On a 1982 merc. 25 hp with a type (C) hand rewind starter what is the function of the shift interlock lever ?<br /> I hope its not important because its n/a at mecr parts list, is this a anti kick back device?

I believe it is to prevent you from starting in gear.

thank you ..............so other than being a potental safty issue its not needed for operation of the motor and wouldnt of effected how it had run
