Whats my old motor worth??

As My other thread stated,I had my 1988 5.0XL 4bbl replaced since I had water in the oil.It does not appear much if anything was used from my old motor for the newer motor replacement.I have not totally discussed my final bill though the new complete motor is a 2005 and $3k and the pull out and replace is $1500 + whatever modifications .Im thinking my old motor has to be worth something...??? Good 3 yr old GLM risers and manifolds ,4bbl Quadrajet,etc.Motor always cranked ,never locked up so I am pretty sure the water intrusion was fresh water .Probably rebuildable but who knows ...thats why i elected to replace.Should I take it and put up sale???Ask boatyard for some credit?? Gotta be worth something??? or should i just let them have it ?? Charlie

Rebuildable 5L shortblock isn't worth much. You can make a lot more parting it out, check ebay for prices and either list it for a little less or put it out for the same price locally. If you just want to unload it, my WAG would be $400-500 on CL.

scrap cast iron is $.03/#

average SBC with exhaust is about 525# so $15.75

on another hand, as indicated by Mike. core value may be $100-200. you would make more parting it yourself, however that will take time.

I/O engines seem to be worth less and less as time goes on since the trend is towards outboards.

You could try selling it as a complete engine, but as mentioned it might be worth more as parted out.

Sell the parts. I developed this hobby after repowering an engine. The last one I did went as follows:
Paid $250 for 1975 boat/trailer with bad piston
Sold:
Cylinder Heads: $160 Ebay
Exhaust Manifold and Elbow: $100 Fbook marketplace
Trim Rams: $125 Ebay
Carburetor: $169 Ebay
Trim Pump/Motor: $150 Ebay
Various other small parts for another $200ish
Sold trailer for $460 on fbook marketplace.

All in after shipping the parts, (heads were $60 to ship via UPS but pretty easy other than carrying into the store) I made about $1000 profit over a few months.
If I were you I'd borrow some garage space from the wife, spend a few days breaking down components, and post on Ebay and a few months later youll have your return.

Aint doing CL again.Put my Mako for sale last week.I never met a bigger bunch of timewasters in my life.Took it off the market and will sell it elsewhere closer to boating season here in NY .Wasted 3 days of my time.

Decided to pull parts and have replacements for my port motor and let the boatyard collect the recycle fee for the block.i will pull the risers and manifolds,carb,alternator and maybe the ps pump and put them on the shelf.Charlie
