Whats on that boat?

So I was testing out my new to me 16? Skeeter last weekend at the local water hole with the wife. We had just got on plane and were scooting rite along when my wife leans back to me and said ?what the hell is that hanging from the bow of that boat?. I finally get in close enough to see two obviously young men hauling @** in an 18? bass boat with two foxy girls whooping as they went. Well the thing that was hanging was there trolling motor! They must have been fishing and spaced putting it up. Well we were kinda heading in the same direction any way so we decide to go see what they are doing and maybe point out that there motor is dragging. Well they slow down and decide that they are where they want to fish so we stop and hang back to see the fun. One kid goes to the front of the boat and calls the other kid up. They chat and point for a sec then try to pull the obviously damaged motor up. It won?t come up. They snatch and pull and finally get it to come loose but the motor would never be the same, it looked like a banana and would not sit back into the cradle. They immediately started up and headed strait back to the marina, probably to go home and tell dad what they had done to his boat.

Don't you mean, "to tell dad that the troller just fell down and they don't know why"?

Like my buddy says, "there are only three of us here and I didn't do it, your mom didn't do it, so how'd it happen...(kid replies) 'I don't know'"

The dreaded "I dont know" blanket answer... My girlfriend kids use it all the time. I told her to punish them the same way as if she finds out they know... Mine dont pull that crap on me...
In other hand, I have been guilty of the same of couple of times. I have never run the boat but a few sec. Of course, I did not have two foxy girls to distract me...

Ouch! As an aside. I wonder if running the main motor with the trolling motor in the water would charge the trolling motor batteries? Anybody know?

no. most troller batteries are not connected to the main engine. you wouldnt want it that way anyway since you will end up possibly draining the main battery and being forced to manual start the main engine.

Yeah, you are right. What I meant to ask is would the main engine force the water to rotate the trolling motor blade and charge the trolling motor batteries?

I did that once, only when the bow came down from launch I knew instantly that I had messed up. Everyone in the boat took a real shower when that head hit the water in front of the boat.

It's a Maxum, so the ball mount came apart and the trolling motor or shaft weren't hurt. They just slapped the bow till I got it shut down. I was told I'd have to put a new ball assy on it, but I made a tool and forced it back together. That was 3 years ago, and it still works fine.

Been there done that. I was lucky that I didn't go too far or just had a good trolling motor because mine lived and didn't have any problems.

It all depends, but it would not bee very efficient. Technically speaking a dc motor can work as a generator. The problem is that you need way more rpms than what the motor would run in order to charge the battery and for longer times. Let's say your motor draws 10 amps and runs at 1k rpm (all numbers fictitious) at max speed. Part of those amps gets dissipated as heat, the other part is lost in connections. Lets say 10% loss. To get those 10 amps back to the battery you would have to make your prop turn at 1.1k rpms to compensate for the 10% loss.
The other problems is that I "guess" your motor is not just connected directly to your battery with a switch to select a different inductor in your armature. It probably has some other electronics that will not allow the charge to pass to the battery..

When I was graduating from my electronic class in high school I did a project to illustrate just that. I had 2 d batteries with a 3 position switch. One position was off, the other position will feed the battery power directly to a 3v incandescent light and the last position will send the battery power to a small 3v dc motor. This motor had another motor connected to its axis, that other motor had its leads connected to a separate 3v incandescent light. You did not need a voltmeter to notice the difference in voltage drop. You could tell by the llight intensity that the rig with the motors was not supplying as much power as the direct battery connection.

I took off with the TM down a couple times. Those kids must have been really distracted or dumb to not noticed the sprays. Maybe they were trying to get the foxy girs shirt wet.
