I've been looking a steering systems for my 1973 hydrostream vector with 175hp merc, the dual ride guide system is old and i can't find replacement cables. I was told to use a single cable because it is safer and is used on modern racing boats, but i've been also told that single on a hydrostream is suicide. I've been lookin at a teleflex dual system for about 350$, and was also told that i might want to upgarade to a hydraulic system for about 500$. Any suggestions? What do you use?

I've got a single telefex on a Eninrude 225HP and it's not a problem. When trimmed properly I can let go of the wheel so it's not overwhelming by any means, at least on my hull.

If you can get a hydro system for only $500 go for it. I looked at upgrading mine and the helm pump alone was $500. By the time I purchased the cylinder and cable I was up over $1K.

I have a Teleflex-Morse No Feedback system. Very nice and excellent people to deal with. On the web.

Seastar hydraulic on a 150 Johnson. Unless you can find a great deal on it the hydraulic will cost you a lot more than $500.

I have a standard rack and pinion system on my 16' Avenger with a 135 V6 Merc. No safety issues at all, except for the pull of the motor when it is not trimmed properly.

Re: Whats steering system do you use?

Lots of folks use hyrdaulic on H-Streams but I prefer the feel of the push-pull cable. If you have the RG system now just get cables. You can get them from any Merc dealer. The Super Ride Guide cables are smoother and last longer.

The hydraulic and no-feedback will mask or hide the feel in the helm. With performance boats like a Stream I've always prefered the feel so you know when you have the gearcase shaped right. Properly set up you'll have no torque in the wheel at speed.

Some hydraulic and NFB systems are not recommended over 55 or 60. Just be careful. A Stream is very forgiving and relatively easy to drive, just be safe.

the hydraulic is a dream. I can steer with one finger and no worries if you let go of the wheel at 50 mph.. would never go back to the cable. i got mine for 300 from a buddy who is a boat salvager I think he has a few right now PM me if you are interested..we might be able to work something

What is a hydrostream and why is it suicide to use a single cable steering system?

teleflex will do fine, hydraulic would be nice but teleflex gives the most bang for your buck.
