I have a 78 Evinrude 115 horse and an 89 Evinrude 9.9, both take a mix of 50 to 1, I was using some Pennzoil 2 stroke stuff I found at bimart and was told to not use it, so what's the best 2 stroke oil I can use and where am I going to find it?

I put in a quart of the Pennzoil the other day thinking that the tank would hold 12 gallons of gas, (after all, the fuel gauge said it was below a quarter) and it only took 10 gallons, so literally my first time out, I had to much oil in the tank, so I thought that maybe if I get a couple of 6 gallon gas cans, and pre-mix the stuff, I would be better off, not sure what kind of damage I could do by using to much oil. Or maybe I'm being to much of a perfectionist?

better too much than not enough, when i fill my tank i put in part of the oil and then fill almost full, then add the rest. best oil, everyone will have an opinion, as long as it is TCW3 rated is all that matters, Shell, pennzoil, walmart. most come out of the same vat.

That 100% synthetic WalMart sells (I think it is Penzoil) is sure good stuff. Make sure you get the 100% synthetic; they also sell a blend. Doesn't smoke nearly as much as the old stuff did. Doesn't smell like bean oil, though. Doesn't smell at all.

I am 100% with Tashasdaddy. As long as it is TCW3 that is all that matters. My personal findings are that whatever I put in to my 140hp Johnson VRO system it smokes the same at cold start up after priming and very little after that. Therefore the cheapest TCW3 is the best for me.
As stated though, everyone will have their own personal opinion.

I just tried Crappy Tire (Canadian Tire for those non Canucks) Outboard oil in my last tank full after using the Petro Canada Stuff my dad had been using, and the bloody motor now smokes like a refinery. Mixed it correctly too!!!!

Back to Petro Canada or something not that Crappy Tire stuff any more!

I decided to pick up the Johnson/Evinrude oil at walmart. It says it has more than minimum of tcw-3? Specially form. for john/rude What ever that means. Is that oil good or should I use the other stuff I have been. The pennzoil tcw-3 syn.

There is a time for synthetic and a time for std dino oil....anytime is fine for blend.
The Penz TCW-III is the oil by which all others are compared to.
If it says TCW-III (or TC-W3) it is just fine for the operational limits of your engine specified by the manufacturer.

Huh???? Now where did you hear that????

All tested oils are compared to the special formulated lab oils that are the at the very minimum TC-W3 specs in all catagories.

ok, from what I'm gathering from your statments is that I want to go TC-W3 and a synthetic blend, it sounds like the manufacture isn't as inportant as long as it TC-W3 rated, am I correct in that statment?

Re: what's the best 2 cycle oil to use?

thats what is said in the first statement. as long as it's TCW3 it works. walmart, kmart, westmarine, merc, johnson/evinrude are not in the oil business. they are in the marketing business. they buy from the cheapest source, and have it bottled with their label. true it may have a drop more of one additive than the other. but thats the only difference.

Re: what's the best 2 cycle oil to use?

Oil that is CERTIFIED TC-W3 and bears the NMMA logo means that the mfr has submitted his oil to NMMA for certification testing. If it passes the tests he is allowed to make that statement. Note that double-talk like "Meets TC-W3 requirements" and does not bear the NMMA logo means that either the oil was not submitted for testing or that it was submitted and flunked the test. "Exceeds TC-W3 requirements" means ??

NMMA is the boating industrie's standards to live by. Stands for National Marine Manufacturers Assotiation.

hmm unusual ,my 90 evinrude runs just fine on the crappy tire stuff!i do alot of trolling ,99 percent ,and the stuff is no better or no worse than anything else ive tryed.smokes a little at start up on a cold morning and then peters out to very faint or non -exsistent .ive gapped my plugs a little wider and this helps a lot for trolling.they may of changed suppliers but i think crappy tire was done by esso a while back.

From the NMMA Certification Test Manual located at www.nmma.org:

"3.2 Certification Marks. Upon certification by a designated laboratory and execution of licensing agreement with NMMA, the NMMA Oil Certification Mark (TC-W3?) must be applied to all registered oil containers (bottles, cans, drums, etc.), and the NMMA TC-W3? oil registration number must be used on all oil container packaging."

You guys complain about smoke. I got a quart of the original BIA Certified 2-stroke outboard oil in an a box at auction and used it (in a motor made about then). Nothing available now smokes nearly as bad, and that old stuff smoked and carboned less than the original old SAE-30 motor oil.

We sell Mercury Premium Plus in bulk at the shop. It smokes less than most.

Yea, but it still goes well with coffee in the morning.
