whats the best method for glassing around/over ski locker

I'm a few weeks away from installing my deck in my 96 bayliner capri. I'm trying to understand the best way to fiberglass around the ski locker. My current plan would be to lay the decking, pb it to the hull, tab it to the hull with 1708, cut out the ski locker opening, cover the entire deck with 2 layers of 1.5 csm, and one final layer of 6oz glass. But how do i go about doing the fiberglass over the ski locker? Do i just cut the opening in the fiberglass once it is dry? Seems like you would want to fold the glass underneath the locker opening but I'm not sure how to do this properly with all the curves involved. Any info would be helpful.

hi,,,,,

i cut out the lockers before i glass the deck in.

i glass the bottom of the deck.....then do my cut outs.....then install...(that way there is no guessing on where the hole is.

after your deck is screwed in.....tabbed in and you are ready to glass the top of the deck....

lay the csm over the entire deck and cut out the area of the ski locker.....leave a good 2 inches of csm to wrap under the lip....

then cust glass in the deck.....the over hang......fold it under.....the csm will separate and make the fold easy.

the hatch cover....just glass that separately using the same methods.

I just cut the hole out for the 'ski locker ring' and bed it sound.

I dont know what use there is for wrapping the glass when its completely bedded in with somthing like 4200 ..

No reason to glass wrap IMHO .. you have a template to cut your ring..follow the template and bed it well.

Worst thing you can do is NOT bed the screws holding the ring in.

..Unless you have a locker that does not have a ring..and just cleats to hold up some wood..

Don't forget to have the ski locker shaved about 1/16th or an 1/8th of an inch wider on the cutout when it is not fiberglassed in.

If this is not taken into consideration, getting that ski locker ring on the deck will be a nightmare without tons of grinding.

Two layers of fiberglass and resin can easily take up an 1/8th of an inch or possibly more.

Without seeing a picture of what type of cover set up he has it's a guessing game.

Yup .. You got that nail Right on the Head there rick ..

But it seems to be the norm now to ask such a simple question with 4 pages of answers..just to find out that the OP is installing X,Y,Z ..

Like pulling teeth sometimes ..

sorry, i dont have any pictures, but your answers have confirmed my thoughts of how to glass it...so thank you. To me it is a typical ski locker set up. It has a metal ring that screws into the locker covering and that ring is what supports the lid when you lay it on the floor.

In that case..no glass wrapping is needed.

Just bed it down and dont forget about bedding the screws.

Dry fit with screws installed..remove..bed..install.

Yup..kinda ..but not precut the glass dry for your hole ( you will never match it up ) leave an inch or so out of your dry precut glass to over hang beyond your cutout.

I would have the opening cut per directions of the template for the hatch flange..then glass the deck..extending a bit over your cut out.

When the glass starts to gel up you can get a fresh razor and cut the overlay scrap as if it were cheese. ( no grinding at all needed if you catch it at the right time

i got the floor screwed down today and i think i finally get what you are decribing about just wetting the glass out an inch or so over the opening and then cutting it out later.

So much of this stuff makes more sense as you go along.
