What's the best way to Clean a Gas TanK?

Wondering if there's any chemical treatments typically effective in cleaning the old old remains of fuel from a 6 Gallon portable tank.<br /><br />Maybe just better to replace it; or have some of you found a method that works.<br /><br />It doesn't seem to be rusty; just a thick liquid sloshing around in there from back when gas was maybe $0.50 per gallon.<br /><br />Thanks, Chuck

Put about a gallon of fresh gas in there, along with a bunch of glass marbles. Shake thoroughly and for about three times as long as you think is necessary. <br /><br />Dump the resulting mess (following EPA rules for disposal, of course :}), then check again. My money's on all that gunk being gone forever.

Don't laugh. Here's how my uncle taught me to clean really rusted tanks. Jack the drive wheels of your car off the ground and secure the 6 gal tank to a wheel. Fill the tank with small rocks (he used aquarium rocks)and let the car idle in gear for a half hour. The interior of the tank comes out looking new. It's an oddball way to do it but I've seen the results. The first time I saw a tank spinning on a wheel in his drivway I said to myself "what the hexl is going on here?"

Wow! Food for thought. Why not just strap the tank to the bows of my boat with a few marbles in it.<br /><br />That'll do the same job, and it's a lot more fun that watching wheels go round.<br /><br />'Not going fishing dear - just cleaning the spare gas tank.'
