Had to rope start Johnny 2001 130hp a week ago, dead batteries. Third pull did it, my partner and I did the trick and headed home for new batteries.

My 1960 Merc 70 6 cylinder "Dockbuster" The battery was always flat (no charger). One of the cool things about these motors was that they had no shift, no neutral, no reverse, no nothin. (Supposedly, you could start the motor in the other direction.)
One early spring day I had to pull start it out in frigid Lake Huron and it wouldn't start so I kept pushing the throttle up to about 3/4. When it did start...what fun!! The takeoff almost threw me over the stern so I grabbed the powerhead. The small 14 ft boat with me and all the weight in back meant I couldn'd get back to the throttle or steering wheel so I had to just steer with the powerhead. Once it speeded up it leveled out enought where I could get back up front but it wasn't easy bucking the big waves.

Just be glad your motor has neutral.

40hp mercury 2 cylinder, and a 75 hp johnny from the 60's. Still prefer a starter.

Hi To All,

My experience with pull starting other than my 6 hp was when I mounted a 48 spl I had purchased used. Had the motor and controls mounted on my flatboat but I must not have had the battery in yet. Not having any experience with this engine I lifted the throtle lever (actually a little too far) turned the key on and when I pulled the rope the darn thing started at about 1/2 turn, I fell down not expecting it to start so quickly. And then scrambled to lower the throttle before I blew the engine. I was impressed by how easy this motor starts with the key. Its running at a touch of the key.

Beck

Re: What's the biggest motor you have ever pull started?

My dad told me not to even try turning over my motor with a pull start.

Being the type of person I am, I LOVE to prove people wrong. HAHA :D

I have a 1981 60HP Johnson Seahorse. It doesn't have the pull start assembly.

It has those little edges on the fly wheel to put a rope on for one pull at a time I'm assuming.

What is the proper procedue to put a rope on the fly wheel?

Thanks :)

Just for kicks I tried to pull start my 250 Verado on my 10ft jon boat. Fired up on the first try!! Took her for a quick spin around the lake with the cowl off. Nothin' like the sound of that supercharger hummin across the lake at 110 mph!! :D :D :D

My Bro in law has a 20 ft Wellcraft Steplift with a 175 HP 'Rude. We have both pulled that baby over when the batteries have died - not all that bad.

85 HP Johnson 5-6 times a day with rope on fly wheel when fishing for the first month. Always fired right up on first or second pull and wasn't hard at all.
A lot easier once the problem was fixed :)

Re: What's the biggest motor you have ever pull started?

In high school, my buddy's battery on 88hp Johnson went flat. All three of us pulled on the rope at the same time. Each time it would move a third or fourth of the way (very slowly). We figured it was not worth trying after 2nd or 3rd pull. Sounds to me we should have kept on. Luckily some old men in a bass cat came by and for some reason (I guess they had been in high school once upon a time) had a pair of jumper cables. We made sure not to stop the engines on the way back to the boat launch. And happened to pass up some darn good marsh bass fishing that afternoon. I'll never forget that day.

A lot of humorous stories. My 1959 50 HP V4 Johnson had a recoil starter. Started easy if you used both hands and "popped" the rope toward your chest. Alternatively, I tried the rope start on my Merc 150HP IL6. I couldn't spin it fast enough. Not even close! If the motor had a recoil starter, I still do not think I could pull it fast enough!

Re: What's the biggest motor you have ever pull started?

I pull started my parents 1969 Merc 1250 inline 6 a couple of times when the starter wouldn't spin fast enough to pop up the gear to the fly-wheel. I haven't had the need to with my 1979 Merc 140 yet, but with my shoulders in the shape they are in now, I'll just keep the battery and starter in good shape. ;) . I have met a few people at the marina's that didn't believe me that an inline 6 could be pull started, untill I showed them.

http://www.myfishingpictures.com/showphoto.php?photo=13003&sort=7&thecat=500&password=

Craig
