yeah I didn't see it on their website..

I only see 225hp as being the biggest by Mercury and Johnson right now...

are the Mercury Optimax engines ONLY 2-stroke?
yeah I really meant what's the biggest motor between your main motor manufacturers like Mercury, Yamaha, Johnson, Evinrude, etc...

sorry for the confusion..
Mercury and Yamaha both have 300 hp 2 strokes.
Mercury Yamaha Suzukie all have 250 four strokes
honda Mercury Yamiha and suzukie have 225 four strokes

Many of the 250-300 hp 2 strokes owned by bass fisherman put out 350 (ported and lots of different parts)

-SLOOPY the sloop
what about the Mercury Optimax engines.. are they 4 or 2 stroke? what makes them so good?

How many cylinders are in them too?

I heard that Mercury was the best.. and they had the best technology and the used the best metals?
okay just clear this up for me.. Mercury and Mariner.. what's the deal there.. are they the SAME motors made by the same company? is one better than the other?
newtoboatsman,

Optimax is 2-Stroke. It uses direct injection (fuel/air) into the combustion chamber. Because the 2 stoke gas'oil mix does not go through the crankcase, it is very efficient.

The Mariner name was created to give Mercury Marine another line to compete with Johnson/Evinrude. Some say it was created to counteract Mercury's perceived lack of saltwater robustness.

The Mariner line is no longer available in the US.
The Mariner line is not sold here because it did not enhance Merc's profits or reputation.

You have swallowed too much of Mercury's sales pitch. Look at Yamaha or Evinrude if you are into the best technical efforts (several others are close behind and working hard).
I heard Evinrude/Johnson are both owned by Bombardier and are currently up for sale? you think they make the best engines?

who makes the best i/o engines?
Yamaha actually makes the engines for most...Mercury for example...but Mercury outboards are better than a competing yamaha with the same engine because they've got a better gear case, and I think usually a better warranty.
Evinrude/Johnson are part of Bombardier Recreational Products. Due to large-scale cash flow swings, the parent Bombardier Corp had to put the highly profitable division up for sale earlier this year. The sale ended with a group headed by Bombardier family members taking ownership, which did not really change much. I viewed this as more of an accounting manuveour.

There are far fewer companies making i/o's. I prefer Volvo.
